Title: 1965 GS Lug Nuts
Post by: mdkd on May 22, 2012, 08:11:21 PM
All

I am looking for a clean set of 1965 Buick GS Lug Nuts.

I ordered a set of 7/16-20 Stainless Steel  Lug Nuts for a Skylark that have just arrived.

They are very high quality and pictured on the right side of the picture below.

I am concerned they may not be the exterior size I am looking for.

The Lug Nut to the left is 7/16-20 and the center one is 1/2-20.

The Lug Nuts that came on my car are 7/16-20 and look a lot different.

Does anyone know what is correct and where I could get them if this new set isn't?

Thanks

Milton

Hi Milton,

Here's a photo of a '65 GS lug nut that came off the hardtop. So I'm confident that it's an original. It's looks like the first lugnut in your photo is an original 7/16-20. The closest reproduction that I can find to it is the same as the last lug nut in your photo.

John

Thanks as always.

The Lug Nut on the left is a sample from the Mark Ascher collection.

Thanks to the two of you I really know what I am looking for.

I'll stick with the stainless for now.

Milton, Mark, John , Hi guys the lug nut in John's pic looks correct! size should be 13/16 hex with 7/16- 20 originals where tool steel with chrome plating! The two different stainless one's  I know of are the ones Cars Inc and Mitch Romanowski sell! I want say the one's Cars sell are the smaller hex size used on the 68 - 72 cars and the ones Romanowski sells might be the same to!? the  tappered cone on these are less pronounced than on the originals. If you use the 13/16 size lug nuts you will have to find a big car lug wrench! this is also correct!( cat , electra). Many years ago my friend Al and I did some in stainless, for our cars! I think Loren has a set to! I still have the profile cutter used to cut the acorn but stainless and the cost to make them is to expensive last time I checked we would have to charge over $ 200 per set! Jon

Jon,

Maybe you should test the waters and see what demand is. I'd absolutely buy a set too.
Post here & on the "other" Buick forum and see what kind of feedback you get.

Jon

Thanks for your input.

The Stainless 7/16-20 (Smaller Nut in Picture) I received was from Mitch Romanowski along with a set of 65 Center Caps.

Like I said the Quality was very good and so was the service but not the exterior size I was looking for on a 65.

Each Nut came individually wrapped in plastic.

I would also be interested in a set of the correct size if it would help you decide on a run.

Agreed.  I was trying to use the 3/4 Stainless from Mitch on my torque thrust wheels, just not enough taper for me to be comfortable.
I have original 13/16 ones that are pretty tattered but the will serve.  I'm "in" if new 13/16 ones are offered! :occasion14:

Guys, I will work on getting a quote in a smaller production. I wish we could talk a vendor into making these as they are used on all 65-67 GS, Skylarks, Specials, Sport Wagons they could also be used on any A-Body Gm 64-72 ! although not correct! Not sure if they were used on any of the 442 , Goats , SS's ? also would look nice on these cars to ! Jon

Did some more research, the lug nuts were also used on the 68 cars also! The lug
wrench that you want to look for is used on the 61-66 big cars . I have two quotes that I am working on with some machine shops will post asap! Jon

Those look nice. Makes you wonder why the big vendors don't just make them right in the first place. I guess they don't figure they could sell 5000 sets at $65 ? . I'll have to sell some spare parts for these..

Jon

My 65 GS wheels are painted and anxiously awaiting the arrival of their LUG NUTS to replace the American Coke Bottle mags I purchased new in 1973.

Yes, those are the original tires with tubes in the picture.

Also notice there is no webbing on the edge of the spokes.

Later versions had the webbing added to the spokes to keep them from cracking I understand.

In any case burnouts in the driveway are out of the question on the old rollers.

PM me with directions on what you need for transaction on one 4 wheel set of correct LUG NUTS.

Milton

The lug nut saga continues.  Has anyone seen these yet?  Look identical to the factory lug nuts that came on the '65.  Being offered by Summit racing on Ebay:

Brian, I have a set of these that I bought over 20 years ago , they are taller and the acorn is bigger they look good, but the cone tapper is not great and they wreck the nut seat! Not blowning my own horn but I would not put them on my wheels! Jon
Title: Re: 1965 GS Lug Nuts
Post by: Brian on October 23, 2012, 01:50:38 PM
I ordered 5 of the Mr. Gasket lug nuts just to check them out and you are correct that they are about 1/8" taller than the original lug nuts.  The seat on them does not look like the one in the picture you attached though. It matches up well with the seat on the originals and on the reproduction ones I just bought from you.
I also figured out something yesterday that may help some people out.  As we discussed somewhere on here before, the chrome wheel lug nuts are 13/16" compared to 3/4" hex for the standard wheel lug nuts.   If someone is trying to find the correct 13/16" lug wrench they can be hard to find.  I figured out yesterday that the lug wrench in the 80-96 Ford F150 trucks is a 13/16".  The bend in the end is slightly less and the handle is about 2" longer.  I quickly remedied the angle issue by heating it with the torch until red and bent it to the same angle as my original 13/16" lug wrench.  I then cut the handle to the correct length and re-shaped the cut end to a 'blade' with an angle grinder.  I will post a picture in a few days once the gray paint dries.  Looks just like the original 13/16" one I have, and they are very plentiful in junkyards.

Here are some pics of the 13/16" Ford truck lug wrench after modifying it to match the 3/4" 65 Buick one I had.  The 3/4" original one came out of a 65 special I parted out many years ago.  I have seen them all different shades of gray.  I painted these with some gray rust-oleum paint.

The wrench in the bottom of both pictures is the one that was modifed from a Ford truck.  It fits the lug nuts with the 13/16" hex.

Brian, the Mr Gasket lug nuts appear to have a larger diameter dome than the original/repo nuts. Is that true?   if so, is it noticeably larger?
While I considered purchasing some of Jon's repos, of the FIVE 65-6 GS's I have, NONE of them came with original rally wheels! I do prefer the 15" wheel anyway. The Mr Gasket version may be good enough for me.... and fit my x5 budget better. :icon_biggrin:
Title: Re: 1965 GS Lug Nuts
Post by: Brian on October 27, 2012, 07:26:01 AM
The dome is slightly larger, but you will never notice it unless you have one laying next to an original on the bench.  You cannot tell it by itself and definiltey will not notice it on the car.   They are about 1/8" longer than the originals, but it would take a pretty keen eye to notice that on the car as well.

Ok here it goes ,is there any interest in more lug nuts on the site? I have checked on having another dozen sets made! I have at least three or four local people interested in sets one guy says get them made I want two sets for sure! So that would cover three or four sets out of the dozen the cost has gone up a little ! It has been three years since I did the last ones! The best price on them would be $215 ! Before shipping this is Not Polished! I'm try to work a deal on getting this done.So if there is interest let me know ASAP as the machine shop has time to work these in the next months Thanks Jon :headbang:
