Title: Fuel and Fuel Return Lines

I rooted around a bit looking in the forum for this topic but did not see anything. Anyway, kinda curious if it is correct that a stock AC car used the fuel return line connecting from the fuel filter to the return line and a non-AC did not? If correct, did a non-AC car have both lines routed on the frame, and if so would this line have been capped or something? Mine is a non-AC car but had an aftermarket AC system installed (which is not going back on) and the filter had the vapor return connection connected back to the return line which I'm assuming got hooked up as part of the AC install. So based on that I guess both lines were installed, but Figure 3-3 in the Gran Sport Supplement seems to suggest otherwise. Like I said, just curious.

Dwaine,

Only AC cars had the return line. They used a different fuel filter than non-AC cars to accommodate the fuel return line. You really do not need the return line but check and see if it is actually connected to your gas tank.

My 65 has no a/c but does have the return line. 
Its probably part of HD cooling or something like would be required by a/c.

Interesting,I haven't ever seen that before. Possibly a production slip up?  :dontknow:

None of my 66's have fuel return lines, and none have A/C.
I believe the purpose of the fuel return line was to prevent vapor lock which could be caused by the higher underhood temps of an air conditioned car.
Ted, yours being part of the HD cooling package sounds reasonable.

Well, I definitely had the return line and definitely have no AC. I installed a new return line and will probably just use it with a fuel filter that has the vapor return connection (if I can find one that will work and fit the bracket). What is this HD cooling package you speak of?

Need to study the Skylark more, but on Wildcats they offered a "air conditioning modification" which was HD cooling, fan shroud, extra penetrations in the firewall...so you could get cheaper aftermarket a/c (  :dontknow:  )   
I'll get a firewall tag photo, see if we can figure it out.  My car had no engine trans or radiator when I got it...no clue what that looked like before.

I have seen the block off panels before on a couple of '65s I've had that were nothing more then parts cars.
 I think it may have resulted as a change to an order after the vehicle was scheduled for production.
Dealers used to be able to do make order changes. It would allow them to speed up a delivery date for a customer.
Manufacturers would schedule a run of vehicles,not specific orders by dealers, issue a list to the dealers of approximate times, models, options and color. Then allow for changes to be made by a dealer to meet their specific needs.

 Maybe that sheds some light ,
