Title: Northwestern Ohio get together
Post by: Loren At 65GS on July 09, 2016, 02:29:24 PM
65 Gran Sport Division gathering
Northwestern Ohio get together in Defiance, Ohio

Rollaround and Vinnie are putting together a 65 Gran Sport Division get together coming up this September 10 and 11, 2016.

Here is what is in the works....

Start about 10:00 Saturday morning with a meet and greet then a couple of short clinics on some sort of Buick restoration,
engines, electrical, interior… and small project time.

A simple lunch then some car show and tell time for guy’s to brag about their cars.
Little swap meet action if guys would like to lay stuff out on the lawn followed with a cruise through the country for dinner, then back to Rollaround's place for some time as a group around a fire pit.

If some would like to spend the night (recommended) there are several hotels close by.

Sunday
Vinnie would like to invite us to his home, he and his bride would like to put on a morning brunch for the group.
Following morning brunch, we can cruise to Auburn Indiana and tour the Auburn Cord  Museum.  http://www.automobilemuseum.org/#home.html (http://www.automobilemuseum.org/#home.html)
Wrap things up and everyone heads home.

Stay tuned, more details to follow.

All

Did some work in Ft Wayne a number of years ago so being a car guy made it up to Auburn.

They had a really big car auction going on at the time along with the Auburn / Duesenberg / ? Museum and a large Corvette Museum. I also remember a truck museum. Talk about a car town. It was awesome.

Does this sound familiar?

I'm going to seriously have to consider this invitation.

Great to see the interest in this event. We are trying to make this a relaxed event. if any one has suggestions for a discussion, or a show and tell, offer them up. Remember this is for the wives also. I am sure they all have stories to tell about us or the cars. My wife can tell you about the Mistress and the Bitch. As we get closer to the date we will need to lock in a head count.

Chuck, there are four motels in Defiance. They are all located in the same area at the HWY 66 exit on HWY 24. We have a Hampton Inn, a Comfort Inn, a Holiday Inn Express and a Super 8. They all are not that old, so your choice.

Hotel listings and some rates here in Defiance.

If someone is into camping there is a great spot very close by, if interested send me a PM. Lots of room for parking cars and trailers.
As Vinnie said, please feel free to throw out any thoughts and/or suggestions.

The Auburn auction is the week before, always over Labor Day weekend; well worth going to.
I think this will be a fun time, I'm getting excited.

I’m trying to generate a listing of members in the IN, OH, MI region.  After talking with Loren it seems the forum software lacks the ability to do so.  I have been scanning recent posts looking for member locations and sending them PM’s to insure they are aware of this event.
I could use some help, if you know of someone in this area please pass the word to them or drop me a PM with their user name.
Thanks

I have had inquiries regarding trailer parking, here’s the scoop.
We have ample parking for cars and trailers here on our property. You will be able to park your trailer unload and load without needing to reposition your trailer.

Local hotels/motels  (see 65.com for listing)  do have parking with turn around space.  However, I would recommend and encourage leaving your cars and trailers here Saturday night for both convenience and security. If anyone plans to be in the area Friday your welcome to park trailers here Friday as well.

Mark, I have sent PMs to  455PEV,  wildcat65 and gssizzler as you suggested. Thank you.

Again guys,  please continue help to pass the word.

It is not out of reach for me to make it to Ohio, but that happens to be the week of our 1st wedding anniversary, for which we already have other plans, so won't be able to make it this year!
BTW, that is also the same weekend as the fall Charlotte autofair, but that should not have any affect on the folks in the mid-west.

I plan to be there. At least for Saturday. I have a very elderly father who can't be left alone for very long so making it a weekend trip is not in the cards. Oh, I'm going to ask you guys in advance not to razz me about bringing the car on my trailer. 3 hours in that car is more than Gail will put up with. (30 minutes is her limit..LOL)

For the record, some people find my car a little odd. Matching #'s engine, Protecto-Plate, original build sheet, original bill of sale, 4 original working T-3 headlights, original keys with the security code knockouts still in them, glass washer concentrate bottle under the hood, but yet it gets driven more at the track than it does on the street. The 4:11 gears, straight exhaust w/headers and no radio (or A/C) is why I'll be trailering it. :overthetop:

Wow, if Milton can make it, that would bring us to 11 confirmed members and cars. Of course I'm including mine, it's currently parked in two different garages maybe three buy then, but I'm including it. It can serve as training aid for a welding class; I'm sure we have an instructor in the group.
Vinnie, I'll make sure we ordered enough t shirts.

I have very willingly agreed with my Yukon to join the fun so we will be heading over to NW Ohio on Friday the 9th and deciding on Sunday when to head back.

At this point I do not intend to bring my 65 and trailer unless someone needs the trailer.

My wife is working out of town the week before and after so she will not be joining us.

I haven't made reservation yet so I was wondering if there is a hotel of choice others are using?

The list Kevin posted sounds like some good choices. Thanks Kevin.

It's been a while since I have been through Chicago. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm willing to pay tolls if it's the best.

Looking forward to seeing everybody and getting to attend the first ever

Milton,
Take 94 to 90 south past Rockford then 90 east. Stop at the Belvidere Oasis and buy an IPass, there almost no cost and you'll go through toll both's at 70 MPH instead of waiting in line. When you approach the Chicago area there are a couple choices. Take 290 south to 355 or 294 then south to I80. 355 is a little longer but bypasses a lot of traffic. If you enjoy driving 75-80MPH in a 45MPH zone in bumper to bumper traffic six lanes wide take 90 right through Chicago just be aware the 70 mph traffic can come to a stop in 400ft for no reason. I always take this route it can be a real adrenaline rush, but then I spent eight years in Chicago. In either case you must be through Chicago by 2PM on a Friday, or bring a bag lunch.

I can't over emphasize the IPass, it's good all the way to the east coast.

Hope it helps. Again thanks for taking the time to make the trip.

The IPass is definitely an essential item. Cost $10 for the IPass and need a $40 deposit through a credit card. Good forever. Not only allows you to bypass the toll booths it cuts the toll cost in half. Pays for itself with one trip through Chicago.

If you hurry you can get an IPass mailed to you before you leave. Oh yeah, keep mine loose and use it in several different vehicles.

We travel a lot to Ohio to visit family and it smooths the process on the Indiana and Ohio Turnpikes.  Also made a few trips east of Ohio into PA, NY and VA.  Works well in all locations, but best around Chicago because you cruise through at posted (or other) speed and avoid toll booths altogether.  I leave mine loose in the car as well.

Happy travels!

I'm not sure if this still applies but when I bought mine it said it can take up to 48 hours to activate it after you've fill out the on line registration. You may want to check on that. And yes it is a big time/money saver. It even reads the trailer so when I'm towing I can still use it.

Milton. Rollaround is correct. The IPass is a must. I have made the trip through Chicago many times. In bound from the North you need to be downtown Chicago by Noon to make it with out a major backup. Once you get to the South side take the Skyway. That will hook up with I-80 Eastbound. You have not lived until you make this trip.

As someone who regularly runs a big rig into and around the Chicago area, I have to agree with the I-Pass suggestions. It reduces the time spent at those dang toll booths, which can be considerable when each stop is added up. As previously stated, get through before 3:00 PM at the absolute latest!

I usually take I-290 to I-294 as that where most of my loads go. I-355 can back up a little at the I-88 interchange but otherwise, it's smooth sailing. If you do take I-355 down to I-80 eastbound stay in the left lane once on I-80 when you get to the I-294/I-80 interchange at the 155 mile marker. There's a toll booth at this spot as well. The right lanes will either exit or merge with the left lane after the toll.

Then you'll join with I-94 a few miles later when I-294 ends. No big deal as you just remain on the same road. At this point, you're now on I-80/94. Then to get onto the I-80/90 toll road, take exit 16 north about 1/4 mile which is marked as I-80 Toll Road, IIRC. There's a service plaza one mile east of that point. Indiana has service plazas every 40 miles or so which are easy off and back on, much like a rest area, but with conveniences like snacks and soda pop etc, available.

Not sure of where you intend to exit to Defiance, as I've never taken that route before. Looking at my trusty map, Ohio Hwy 15 appears to go directly there from exit 13, albeit through  few towns.

Wish I'd thought of that. Probably a bit longer but a lot less hassle coming from Minneapolis. Still need that IPass though.

If You get a chance. The ferry across lake Michigan from Milwaukee is really cool. and you can avoid the whole Chicago mess. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable taking my GS on the ferry, but I've taken my pickup and it was great.    Bill

This is an option, although it's about 40-50 miles longer. One thing to consider is there is road construction on I-39 15 miles south of Rockford right now. Single lane each way with regular backups, according to CB chatter. Might also be some road work on I-80 between I-39 and Chicago too.

Another option would be taking IL Hwy 251 south from Rockford to I-80. It's mostly 2 lane and through a couple of towns, but likely better to waiting out a construction delay. I'll try to get an update on I-39 this week.

Hey Milton,

Glad to see you're making the trip.  Since you will be coming this way enroute to Defiance, you might be interested in another little side trip that a few of us will be making on the way.  On Friday, a few of us will be visiting the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, MI, about a 40 minute drive from Battle Creek.  Loren and Dan will be arriving on Thursday and we'll visit the Gilmore, then convoy on down to Defiance, arriving Friday night.  You are most welcome to join us if you'd like to add a day and break up the trip a bit.  Let me know if you're interested and I'll get more info to you.

And the invitation is open to anyone else that wants to join in.  Just let me know so that we can make plans to meet up before the Gilmore.  http://www.gilmorecarmuseum.org/ (http://www.gilmorecarmuseum.org/)

Both Glenn and I are thrilled with the response to this event.  We ask that every member share sense of ownership in our Northwest Ohio Get-Together.  If anyone has a suggestion to improve, add or delete something do not hesitate say so.
What to bring, I suggest, simply bring whatever you would bring to a car show.
If you have pictures of a 65 GS restoration project on a memory stick please bring them. We will use them for a running slide show.
I’d ask that everyone coming take a few photos so we can create some historical documentation. My neighbor is a photo buff; he spends his summers traveling to NASCAR and other events photographing cars. He will help arrange our cars for a group photo.
If you have a small project involving welding, polishing chrome/stainless, something that requires a blast cabinet or a 20 ton press, the tools are available; bring it.
We will start early Saturday morning;  feel free to arrive early.  If you’re going to be in town Friday, please stop by, Glenn and I may put you to work.   If you’re bringing a trailer I recommend bringing it by as soon as you arrive in town.
If you’re using GPS it will bring you close to our driveway, we are the first home south of Bronson Park on the west side of Power Dam Road.  There will be signage at the drive entrance.  Look for the signs and two red brick columns at the drive entrance; it’s easy to miss the drive as the home sits back off the road.
If you’re towing a trailer, be prepared to make a wide turn when entering the drive,  it’s very doable, we’ve had a large motor home with a very long trailer make the turn.
The address is.
Twenty Two Zero Eight  Power Dam Road, Defiance Ohio.
My cell is 651 two four five  nine four one two
Ideas, suggestions?    Looking forward to it!
More later.
Kevin

Here we are with four days to go, we're closing in on what will be a great event.

If you are thinking you don't want to miss this, it's not too late yet. No matter the year of your GS, Skylark or Special, it would be great to have you in attendance.

Looking forward to a fantastic time.  Many thanks to Kevin and Glenn for their hard work putting this together.

This Northwestern Ohio gathering is shaping up to rival the gathering at the BCA Nationals in Springfield. Unfortunately I am unable to attend for various reasons. I hope this becomes an annual event. Drive safely and have fun. Thanks to Glenn and Kevin for putting this together.

There could be some showers in the area but we won't let them dampen our spirits.  If you're reluctant to drive your pride and joy in the rain I understand. But please if that's the case, don't just not come, drive your daily driver, this is as much about the people as the cars.

More later.

That is my plan at this point Jim because it has not been driven since you were here. I actually changed the oil and put in some new fuel yesterday. My other car is still topless and interiorless.

Just a quick thought. Bring a lawn chair and whatever you may like to drink. I will have water, some soda, and a small selection of cold beer. Lunch will be my world famous or at least south Defiance famous sloppy joes, and chips with cole slaw. Our grill is available if someone would like to use it.

The rain forecast is slowly evaporating, we have had a very dry summer, the rain has gone north or south of us all year. We need the rain so this is just poor timing; I'm forecasting AM drizzle with clearing in the afternoon. If it rains we will just move in doors.

I hate to be the 11th hour killjoy but my elderly Dad I had mentioned in a previous post managed to land himself in CCU. I honestly can't be 3 hours away. If you are of faith, please pray for him. If not, toast him with a scotch. Seriously, I was so looking forward to actually meet all of you but first things first. Sorry to bail on such short notice. :(

Finished the event today with a yummy brunch (thanks Glenn and Bonnie!), then a 40 mile cruise to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum.  Viewed some beautiful cars (and a lady in the parking lot taking pictures of Loren's car on his trailer), then said our "see you next time"s and departed.  What a great weekend.  A huge thanks again to Kevin, Angie, Glenn and Bonnie for an outstanding weekend of our favorite cars and old and new friends.  Since this was the "First Annual", we're already looking forward to next year's event!

Cheers!

What a great time!  I just can't say how appreciative I am to Glenn, Bonnie, Kevin and Angie for all they did to make this happen.

Friday at the Gilmore Museum was not enough time to see all that is there.  Definitely will be another trip to that.  Then Saturday, a fantastic , fun day with old and new friends, participation gifts, good food and company.  Just a great time in all.

It was a bit smaller then we had anticipated but there is always next year. As you can see from the pictures, we had more then just '65 Gran Sports show up. So don't be shy folks. This is about the people just as much or even more then the cars.

Here is to hoping future get togethers will spread East, West, North and South.

They definitely put on a good show and we had a great time. We got back late today and had no issues with the Buick which had not seen any miles in a long time. Kevin and Glen did a great job with their spouses in organizing this event. It was nice to meet some new faces and I think everyone had fun.No one posted our souvenir that Kevin made with his pocketknife...(think they will believe me,Kevin?)... Thanks for the invitation and all the hospitality.

Thanks guys for the kudos.  Glenn and I started kicking this get-together idea around last spring. Sunday afternoon as I took the first annual get-together banner down, I felt a sense of satisfaction that we had pulled it off. But it wasn't just us, once again we proved to ourselves its not the cars in the room but rather the people standing around them.

I'm rather new to Buick's, I learned more standing around my GS project for five minutes with Loren, Chuck and 'the' Dan's than I've been able to learn in the last couple years.
We received some much needed rain here in Defiance and made new friends at the same time, can't get much better than that. Dan B, I'll be sharpening my pocket knife and be getting started on the plaques for next year.

Dan I'll leave it to you to post your brides Christmas card picture.

One more note, everyone should be aware you helped make Marv's day, maybe his year. He had a great big smile on his face as he passed his scrapbook around the dinner table. Hopefully next year we can drive down to his place and see his collection.

Again, thanks everyone for helping making this a weekend to remember, hope to see ya next year if not sooner.

Your picture looks a lot like the gas station at the Gilmore Museum.

Did you actually take the picture there or was there some picture magic done to come up with this great combination?

The picture sure adds to the ambiance of your garage.

Thanks for passing on the contact information.

Thanks Milton. The photo is all smoke and mirrors. It was taken at a car show, the car was surrounded by people and cars with a church in the back ground.  He can also work with your photo, so if you have a favorite photo of your car give him a call. My print is 26"X39" he has larger and smaller and he has several back grounds available.
I thought his prices were very reasonable. If you're interested give him a call; he's very good about returning calls.
By the way, the yellow car won the best engine award at the show.

Dear Jerry and mid-60s Buick caregivers of all sorts,

Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes. Dad is OK but he isn't coming home. He is resting in long tem hospice now.

All I can offer you is my sympathies.  It has been a rough summer here at our house.  Health can degrade much faster than anyone would prefer.

How quickly things can change is such a short time. So I wanted to share a photo of the old man; it was taken Just before we put the car up for the winter several years ago.

There is a world after this one and it will be perfect in ways almost impossible to conceive of.  Nonetheless it won't be unfamiliar . . . after all, it will have Buicks in it!!  :angel4:
