Title: What paint to use for console
Post by: blacksleeper on April 01, 2009, 09:28:57 AM
Recently acquired a console from benderbrew(thanks Len by the way).  It's blue and I want to paint it black.  What do you guys recommend to use for paint to get the best results ?

Is this a 'shorty' console or a full length automatic console ?

I've had good luck with regular spray-can paint. One of the companies, Krylon?, has a Fusor line that is supposedly formulated for plastics.
Preparation is the key to good results. a good scrubbing with soap and water followed by scuffing the surface with fine sandpaper or scotch brite pad should do it.

For console restoration where you do not need to change the color, rubbing compound and wax will bring the shine back out of the plastic.

If the console (late 66, 67) or consolette has a textured finish, prep by scrubbing with Bon Ami or Comet/Ajax and a brush....it'll clean deep down, and scuff the surface for paint adhesion.

To redo the flocking (fuzz) inside the compartment, Don Jer Products has a kit for about $25.

Full length console.  I've used the Krylon fusion before and it works well.  Not sure it comes in a semi-gloss black though, guess I'll have to check.  Thanks for the tips on the prep work.

Yes it comes in satin black, or at least it used to. My can says #2421. When I redid a shorty console SEM, which is a vinyl dye, seemed to adhere well to plastic also.
