Title: Looking for some '66 information
Post by: Brian on September 28, 2009, 01:43:39 PM
I know there are some guys on here with 1966 cars and thought maybe someone could help me with some information.  I have a 66 Skyark (not a GS) and for many years now have been searching for a factory vacuum truck release setup for it.  I figure I am going to have to buy the pieces separately (already have the correct button), but I have never actually seen what the correct actuator looks like for a '66 Skylark.  The service manual shows a representation of it, but I need to see a good picture of one so I will know when I find the right one.
On that same note, if someone has or knows where I could find one, I would really appreciate that information too!

Brian, I don't have a trunk release. But I do have 2 pages from the 66 assembly manual that show the installation.

Thanks for the information Walt.  Those are the same two pictures that are in the '66 Chasis service manual in the accessories section.   I have an idea what the actuator looks like from that picture, but I need a detailed picture of it so I can find the right one.  Also, the way that picture shows it mounted is impossible if you look how the structure for the truck latch mechanism is made in the trunk--it can't hang out past the structure at an angle like shown in that picture--the structure is right in the way in that area.

Brian, I saw a setup from a 63-65 Riv at the Carlise swap meet today. I took a few pics for you.
The 63-64 actuator produces a vacuum when you pull the knob out. The 65 actuator relies on a separate vacuum can connected to the engine. I didn't ask the price.
If you would like the guys contact info, send me a PM.

As usual, late to the party but just found this so here are some pics from one of our 66 Gran Sports. Might still help someone.

That is definitely different than what is shown in the service manual!   Since I originally started this thread, I have installed the setup on my '66 that is shown in the service manual.  I had to cut out the side of the trunk latch support to match the different style shown in the service manual, but that was actually pretty easy.   Walt had a car with open sided style trunk latch support and made a paper pattern off of it for me.  This is what it looks like once I completed it--works perfectly and looks just like the setup in the manual:

Mine was supposedly dealer installed when the car was new but who knows for sure.
