Title: (HELP) Grey and black trim colors on chrome parts
Post by: nailr65 on September 26, 2009, 05:55:07 AM
On the Gran Sport chrome trim pieces in and outside the vehicle there are the grey and black trim colors.  Does anyone know what theses colors are and were I can find them?  Also is there a preparation necessary for the paint to adhere to the chrome?

Thank you for your time
Regards Dave

The black I used for the dash and even the tail light black, is SEM Grand National Black. It not glossy and not totally flat. Kind of a satin. I use it on everything black!! Even my steering pump and other parts under the hood. I'm not saying it's a 100% correct, just my preference.

I'm sure they have a gray too.

Walt?? Help please?

I don't know of any method Buick used to improve adhesion. All I've found is paint right on top of the chrome, not even any primer. These days, there are adhesion promoters avail to etch the chrome. For small items, it's probably not necessary.
For interiors, I use either spray can gloss black, but misted on to kill the shine a little, or a urethane mixed with a little flatting agent and applied with a small spray gun.
Isn't the grey actually silver?

For exterior chrome, I just did the grille and headlight doors on my 66 today. I polished the chrome with fine steel wool, masked the chrome off with masking tape, then sandblasted at a low pressure with aluminum oxide/glass bead mixture. That etched the surface nicely and cleaned out the minor pitting. Any pits were gone over with a small, fine stone on a dremel to smooth them out a bit more. Finished it off with a few coats of black urethane and some flatting agent. I'll get a better look at it tomorrow when I can put it on the car! :icon_biggrin:

Krylon "dull aluminum" spray paint is a perfect match to the silver used in the outside vent ports in the fender and on the instrument panel and radio panel housings.  On a regular Skylark, it is also a perfect match for the silver in the grille and headlight bezels (GS uses black instead).
