I'm going to be pulling my GS engine to fix some leaks and detail both the engine and engine compartment. This 401 Nailhead stuff will be a learning experience so I'll be asking lot of questions of the experts.
So here's the first one. Can you pull the engine and transmission with the exhaust manifolds installed?
-
Sorry, but the exhaust manifolds need to be removed and/or unbolted. The drivers side manifold can not be removed until the engine is lifted partially out of the car.
-
Dan,
Brian & I dropped the engine in with manifolds bolted on. I'd assume you could remove the same way.

Mark, was the transmission mated with the engine on your install? Was the core support or front clip installed or removed?
-
Trans & bell housing were in the car first. Core support & front clip all bolted on.
Engine dropped pretty much straight down. Pics are posted in my restoration thread.

It's post # 26 in Mark's restoration thread. http://65gs.com/board/index.php?topic=20.90 (http://65gs.com/board/index.php?topic=20.90)
The passengers side can be on the engine, but when I have pulled them with the trans and bell housing attached the drivers side always hung up.
Mark, was the starter on the engine when it went in ? Mark installed a high torque mini starter on his car. While the engine is out that is another good addition.

Dan, starter was not bolted on. I popped that in later.
Easy with a Tom T unit.

Is the original starter a challenge?
Members posting their car project progress has gotten the spring car blood going. I hope to get the car on the lift in the next couple of weeks and get started. Our home remodeling and garage addition project has reached the 'habitability' point and will be set on the back burner until winter. If I arranged this correctly it should be landscaping and car stuff from now until fall.
I'll post progress pixs when I start and will look forward to your advice.

Yes!

Requires unbolting the motor mounts, raising the engine, and loosening the exhaust manifold!
Leaving the solenoid off until after the starter is in position may help, but getting the wires and cables in position is then more difficult. Be certain the cable is not shorted to ground....that can get ugly!

There is always a extra set of hands available when needed. I will call you. Working on my 65 getting it ready for the season.
remove headers, detail engine, detail firewall and a general top to bottom detailing.

Great, I'll put he coffee on the burner and the beer on ice.

I did not need to remove the manifolds when I took mine (engine/trans) out. I used a load leveler which was of great help.
Good luck and have fun.

FWIW... I certainly DO NOT claim to be a know-it-all of the 65 GS by any means, however, I removed a 401 from a 65 GS vert TRANS AND EXHAUST MANIFOLDS INTACT... FRONT CLIP REMOVED is the easiest less obstructive process... SET the car up on 'jack stands' as high as you can.... plus utilizing my "ENGINE LEVELER" is always a huge help as Joe mentioned. Remember to remove the GROUND STRAP on the back of the PASSENGER SIDE HEAD to firewall!!
Removing the engine/tranny assembly was maybe a lil trickey especially driver side manifold at the cross member. Prying a bit here'n there using shim of 1x4 lumber to help guide it out...
When I RE installed the 401 back in, I did it complete with manifolds, trans, starter etc intact... no real issues using the same 'pry bar, or 1x4' to help it along...
Worked for me.

Yep, learned that lesson the hard way.
