Title: Rear Axle Flange Gaskets
Post by: cwmcobra on March 08, 2016, 06:25:15 AM
When I disassembled my rear axle, I found that it had the paper gaskets to seal the flanges in two places.  Between the axle flange and the outside of the brake backing plate AND between the inside of the brake backing plate and the axle retainer.  Is this correct or should there just be a gasket between the axle flange and the brake backing plate?  Only one set of gaskets is shown in the manual, just wondering what your experiences have been.

Thanks,

Chuck

There should be a gasket in both locations.  Fel-pro has them and they specify a different part number for each of the two locations you listed, but the only difference in the two gaskets is one has a tab at the bottom for some reason.  I think the one with the tab goes between the axle retainer and the inside of the brake backing plate.

I thought there was a Dealer Service Bulletin issued on this.... and there was..... for 1966 models.
In January 1966, Buick went to a thicker rear brake backing plate on GS models. This did not use a second gasket between the retainer and backing plate.

Try this Bill:  http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/buick,1965,gran+sport,6.6l+401cid+v8,1319307,drivetrain,axle+shaft+flange+gasket,1760 (http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/buick,1965,gran+sport,6.6l+401cid+v8,1319307,drivetrain,axle+shaft+flange+gasket,1760)

One with the tab and one without.  I actually bought four with the tab because that's what my axle had in it.
