Title: fuel/brake line clips color ?
Post by: 35chevcoupe on January 08, 2017, 04:32:18 PM
Just pulled off the fuel / brake line clips off my frame and they appear to have a olive greenish color on the back side of the clip , does this sound right for the color of the clips and does someone sell them the correct color clips ?
I see silver colored clips but nothing colored .
Thanks

For my 66 GS I used green zinc phosphate primer from IES. Bought it at the local auto body supply store

Green is probably correct.  My new ones are red and I left them that color.  The car already has enough green on it!  :-)

They are as Walt described. John, if they are usable, blast them and paint the chromate green.
No one has them in that color if I recall correctly.

Thanks guys !
I,ll probably put them in my tumbler with a bunch of other parts . That color looks really close to the color thats on the clips now .
Mark , they are in nice shape surprisingly .

Chuck , where did you get red ones from ?

John,

Mine came with my fuel and brake line package, I'm sure from Right Stuff.  I put a 3/8" fuel line in, so my clips are a little larger than stock, and maybe why they are red.  If you need more info, I can give you the number of the guy I bought my set from.

pn 4530.... looks like is was discontinued.  IES shows #4186 'All in one self etching primer'  as a suitable replacement. No idea if it's a color match.

A Google search for ' green zinc phosphate' produces a few more options, like this one from Seymour Paints:
http://www.seymourpaint.com/product/zinc-phosphate-primer/ (http://www.seymourpaint.com/product/zinc-phosphate-primer/)

A Marine or Aircraft supply may carry other brands.

This is what I used on my 66 that had green clips, matched OK. Picked it up at a local marine store, for less than $10.00. I am going to use it on my trim clips.

Chuck , Where did you get your fuel /brake lines ?  Thats very interesting that your fuel line is 3/8 , Thats something I would be very interested in .
I wonder if these cars ever have or had a fuel starvation problem , especially running dual carbs .

John,

I'm going out on a limb here, but I bought all the hard lines from Inline Tube. I sent them the long fuel/brake lines and they duplicated them.
I should still have them if you need them as patterns. Inline was the only supplier, at that time, that had the correct rear axle and front crossmember
lines. I've read quite a bit about issues with Inline, but my experience was good. I bought Right Stuff and Classic Tube and none of was 100% right for
a Skylark GS. You could make it fit, but looked like it was for another, possibly more common a-body.

Hi John,

Got my lines from Bob Castle, an independent in the Detroit area.  Met him at a Swap Meet in Kalamazoo last February and decided to buy from him.  He is a former employee of InlineTube that left them because he was unhappy with their customer service.  So most of the stuff he sells he gets from Right Stuff.  He's very familiar with both companies' products.  My lines came from Right Stuff.  His prices were good and he really went to extremes to get the front brake line correct.  I had no problems at all with any of the lines except that front one.  After several attempts to get it right (including sending one from InlineTube) I sent him my old line and he took it to Right Stuff and waited while they reproduced it.  I had called InlineTube and they told me they didn't have a front line for the 65 GS.  I told them that Mark had sent one to them as a pattern and they had no record of it.  So I guess I experienced some of that lacking customer service that Bob was unhappy with.  I bought new E-brake cables from him as well.

I recommend him; he'll go out of his way to make his customers happy.  Here's his contact info if you are interested in talking with him:

Chuck,

My dealings with Inline Tube and the GS go back almost 20 years, so it's not a surprise that that info is lost.
This is when John K himself was doing customer service, and I always got along with him.

Understood Mark, and I'm not trying to take anything away from InlineTube.  Just sharing my experience.  I was quite surprised that they had no record of the pattern they should have made when you sent yours to them.  Didn't realize that your interaction was that long ago.  My painter buys all his lines from InlineTube and is generally happy with them.  At any rate, I think I've had as good or better luck with Right Stuff dealing through Bob.  Another option to consider.

Chuck , I just noticed you have 3 lines running along your frame . My car only has 2 lines , did something get removed from my frame ?
How did you guys have them shipped  without the lines being all bent up ?

John,

The third line is a return for A/C cars.
To ship, the lines get bent about 180? in one spot to fit in a box. the bends are marked so you know where to straighten them.

Thanks Mark .
Here I  thought I was missing another part .
If they bend them in 1 spot , must still be a pretty big box .
