Title: Dusty's new lights
Post by: Barb69 on April 03, 2017, 10:25:57 PM
I do not think I had posted pictures of Dusty's  new lights.  He is being so fancy with day light running lights.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170404/78e686b461faabe5bf4cdce97cee9cb1.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170404/d63f1b8e895772d48c8264ea28ddd570.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170404/6a1ef40fc9c35b9c752a5398220dc7a4.jpg)

Title: Interesting! Halo type? (Re: Dusty's new lights)

Yes please!  Could you tell us more about how you set this up?  Does Dusty have a daytime running light module that connects to the battery?  Are these daytime running lights the halo style?  It isn't clear from the photos but this sort of thing is very hard to photograph.

Do tell!

It was the Amber Led Halo  5 3/4 from Octane lighting.  Very easy to install.  I did connected the daylight running lights to the fan switch. I take a picture at dusk for better resolution.

Dear Barb and mid-60s Buick owners who "illuminate" their world,

Okay, I'm familiar with Octane lighting.  I've already bought a upgrade kit from Daniel Stern's Lighting Consultancy (http://www.danielsternlighting.com/) for the headlights.  Since they are of a Hella/BMW design, I think I'll stick with that.  I have a Phillips Daytime Running Lights system as a substitute, but that's more of a problem.

I did connected the daylight running lights to the fan switch.

The Phillips kit has a neat feature.  It only comes on when the engine is running and it dims at night.  Supposedly that is a Department of Transportation mandate of some sort.  I have them installed on Coquette (our 2000 Buick Century.)  They look fine on a more modern car.  I'm not so sure they will look okay on a 1965 car.

I take a picture at dusk for better resolution.

If you could, I would be curious.  I thought the halo effect wouldn't be as nice on a older car given some of advertising I'd seen.  Perhaps I was wrong about that.

Thanks again for sharing.

Cheers, Edouard

Title: Thanks - better than some halo lights (Re: Dusty's new lights)
Post by: elagache on April 05, 2017, 11:11:12 AM
Thanks Barb for the photos,

The Octane Lighting headlights definitely look nicer than some other halo headlights I've seen put on a mid-60s Buick.  One thing to keep in mind is that headlights of the 1960s aren't as well designed optically to keep glare out of the eyes of oncoming drivers.  However, most of us don't drive our classics much at night, so it isn't much of a problem.  You've found a nice way to add daytime running lights without changing the appearance of your car.  Good job!

Cheers, Edouard
Title: Octane Lighting URLs (Re: Dusty's new lights)
Post by: elagache on April 05, 2017, 09:29:41 PM
Dear Barb and mid-60s Buick owners with extensive collections of automotive related bookmarks,

I learned of Octane Lighting as an eBay storefront:

http://stores.ebay.com/Octane-Lighting (http://stores.ebay.com/Octane-Lighting)

Tonight out of curiosity, I searched for Octane Lighting and found that they have an independent website of there very own:

https://www.octanelighting.com/ (https://www.octanelighting.com/)

So what did I do?  Of course!  I created a bookmark for the independent website and grouped it next to the eBay bookmark!  Once a packrat, always a packrat!! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/packrat-emoticon.png)

 Barb,

If I read this correctly, for the running lights come on , you have to turn on thee cars blower for the heat/ A/C system.  Is that correct?
Is the power for the lights run through a relay?

No,  all I have to do is start the car. The day light running lights are hooked up to the cooling fan of the radiator.

Title: Temperature switch for radiator fans? (Re: Dusty's new lights)
Post by: elagache on April 06, 2017, 10:58:53 AM
Dear Barb, Loren, and mid-60s Buick owners with infinite "to-do" lists,

No,  all I have to do is start the car. The day light running lights are hooked up to the cooling fan of the radiator.

It is definitely a minor issue, but there are temperature controls switches for the radiator fans.  That way the engine can warm up quicker from cold and the fans only run when needed.  Dusty is fine with the fans running all the time, but if someday you have the time, you might make this "mor' bettr'" improvement.  There are inexpensive controller boxes to automatically turn on the daytime running lights.

Just a few more things you can put on your Dusty "to-do" list!  :laughing7:

Title: Another power source for daytime running lights (Re: Dusty's new lights)
Post by: elagache on April 06, 2017, 09:50:46 PM
Dear Barb and mid-60s Buick electricians,

I forgot there is a way to save the 10 bucks for the daytime running lights control.  You can split the power feed from the windshield wipers.  One of those wire is powered on only when the ignition is in run.  That's how the wipers always return to park even you stopped them in mid-sweep by turning off the ignition.  However, you would have to find a path for that extra wire.

Maybe you thought you were done with Dusty!  Trusty me, classic Buicks never feel like they've gotten enough of your attention!  :laughing7:
