Correct factory finish on power steering cap?
« on: March 25, 2025, 09:34:26 PM »
What is the correct assembly-line finish on a 1965 power steering cap? I've been bare metal, painted and zinc(?) plated versions - I think bare metal is correct.  Does anyone know for certain?

Also there were 2 style caps - the earlier (correct for 1965 version) had 2 lines across the cap - can anyone confirm?

Thanks!
Dan

Dear Dan and mid-60s Buick caregivers who are detail-oriented.

. . . . .

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures to prove it, but the power steering cap in our trusty 1965 Buick Special with a 300 cid V-8 was painted the same color as the pump itself.  For better or worse, the paint on the cap wasn't very resistant to the power steering fluid.  Eventually, the paint just flaked off.  At some point we cleaned off the leftover paint and that left a bare metal cap.  There was no problems with corrosion so the cap wasn't simply steel, but what it was composed of I don't know.

I hope that is a little bit of help at least.

Edouard

P.S.  If it matters, Biquette rolled off the GM Fremont assembly line in May of 1965.
