Should I list chrome for sale?
« on: September 23, 2024, 03:01:29 PM »
I am considering listing parts for sale from a 1965 Special I just cutup. The rear window chrome is as nice as one would find on a car and it looks great. So trying to decide what to advertise it for I discovered reproduction trim for $185 and free shipping. That means I would list it at around $100 and buyer pays shipping, or it isn't worth my time to find a tube and drive five miles to a shipping point to send it on its way. I hate to toss the trim in the garbage, but I want to be realistic about my options....... ideas?

I started a response to your question and ended up deleting it because it looked more like a rant.

:BangHead: This Emogine describes my current feelings about trying to get a fair price for the parts that have been saved.

Hi,

As Loren's emogi says getting the price you think it's worth is always a pain.  We have all collected parts that we still remember what we paid for them or the car we took them off of and what the going rate was at that time.

Some people still want OEM parts not repops so they are worth something to someone, someday.

Before you throw them out put them up for what you're time and maybe a percentage less than the repops list. If you're going to toss them to make room list them for what packing and your time+shipping is and hope you help someone fixing up their car, kinda paying it forward to the hobby so to speak.

One day the parts won't be repoped or available so you could label and hold onto them until then although might be you heirs who see a dollar from them.

Sorry if this was a rant, but hopefully it helps you realize a option you can live with.

Regards,
Jim

i think it depends on how hard the specific parts you are trying to sell are . Windshield trim usually isn't to hard to come by especially if it is shared by other GM A bodies .
Now parts that are 65 GS specific , thats a whole other story .
just my 2 cents worth .

Thanks for all replies. The trim I had in mind was 64-65 sedan rear window chrome trim that is as good as anyone can find OEM. To me it is worth around $100, but if you add shipping it is getting close to reproduction trim prices that may come with free shipping. I do have some Skylark specific chrome that I will be listing, really nice wall-to-wall taillights, but that will be another post.

I would definitely stash them for now because I have  spent a little more time or money polishing them or having someone else do it after buying new. I have yet to see anything repop that fit and looked as good as original. One of the larger mistakes on working on any car is assuming new is better. Not trying to sound weird but I have even reused oem ball joints from low mileage cars because  the replacements are not oem quality. This is one of the reasons we see NOS parts bringing silly amounts and I can agree that some of the parts we save may not be worth our efforts. I also think that what may be worthless or worth something today can change tomorrow. I have bought parts from many on this site and often the parts were better than anything available at the time. Just try to make a point to save the good stuff and rid yourself of it AFTER car is complete. My two cents anyway

I will be interested in your taillight chrome when you get around to listing it.

Thanks
