65 Skylark GS grille restoration
« on: May 29, 2024, 11:31:47 PM »
Can someone enlighten me on the Correct method of restoring my 65  Skylark GS grille and grille extentions please. What I'm most curious about, is the grey cove section at the bottom of the grille, and how to replicate that look?

Thanks in advance,
MR-136.

If you have nice chrome you?re  in good shape?.I can?t even recommend any good chrome shops that won?t screw up your pot metal parts. I have heard good things about a few so maybe someone could help you with that. Provided your chrome is ready you can use regular light argent silver or code 8867 GM silver on the lower headlight housings and grill. Prepare parts with 320 grit sandpaper and clean with acetone before spraying. You can literally do a show job using spray cans if your patient between coats. The grill and bezels are supposed to be black satin under the ribs that are hard to tape but it can be done with good quality 3M automotive tape. I have found that a GS grille and skylark grill can be used interchangeably with some patience. Look at some of the finished cars in the resto section for pics you can zoom on. Semi gloss black also works well on the grill if you do not have satin. No gloss black or flat black on these parts.

Krylon "dull aluminum" spray paint is the consensus.  See links above. Thanks

To be clear, Skylark and Gran Sport grilles are the same but are finished differently. A Skylark grille is painted the Argent silver. A Gran Sport grille is painted Satin black in the areas the Skylark is Argent silver.
