Replacement throttle shafts for AFB carb?
(1/1)
WkillGS:
Anyone have a source?
I'm rebuilding a 2x4 carb, #3645. The shafts are corroded and now twisted after getting them unstuck.
Prefer to install new shafts if they are avail. I found one source for AFB's but they are too short for the Buick carbs.
Plan B is to see if I can swap shafts from a 1x4 carb.
telriv:
Need primary or secondary???
NO replacements available for 2x4 primary.
Secondary mostly are all the same with very minor differences.
Should have soaked them in a mixture of ATF & acetone.
I have soaked some for 2 weeks plus.
You NEVER what to twist & pull as you found out they do twist & bend.

WkillGS:
Tom, I did try soaking with PB Blaster and Acetone/trans fluid, over about a year!
I finally used a propane torch to do heat/cool/penetrant/wax cycles and slowly got the shaft to start moving after about an hour!
I have at least 2 carbs that could use new shafts, primary and secondary.
I've seen replacement shafts for some Chev and Mopar applications, trying to find something that will fit, or find the manufacturer.
I haven't yet checked whether 1x4 carb parts will fit, thought I'd ask here first.
It's not a high priority right now, just trying to make progress on unfinished projects.

Walt,
You can take the actuating piece off the throttle shaft & braze/weld it onto the replacement shaft.
I've done this MANY times in the past when I've run into a situation such that you are having.
