TrunkMonkey, that is an excellent response. Back when I did mine in around 1980, the parts were generally available from GM yet. They had service kits, if I remember right.

Where, today, can one get the parts you list after one does the inspection and determines where the needs are (or, perhaps best, get all the possible wear items and put all new in, and save that of the old that isn't too badly worn)?

Corvette suppliers are often a great source for shifter and even T-10 parts..... Ecklers, Zip Corvette, etc.
I've seen different thicknesses of spacer plates avail to accommodate worn parts, and even reverse switch parts.
You can even buy a repo Chevelle shifter if you want all-new.

I once bought a Muncie shifter at a swap meet, it had a real short handle but was otherwise identical to my 65 GS shifter. No idea if it came from a Vette, but the short handle gave me that thought.

Installing a Hurst shifter will require opening up the original shifter hump hole a little to provide clearance.

Agree that Buick should have used a wide ratio behind the 401.
I wonder if their decision to use a close ratio was due to the lower ratio first gear of the wide ratio having a lower torque rating?

I may be looking for a Dearborn 3 speed trans if someone has one available. I picked up a 66 GS 3 speed vert a few years ago. Been doing a ton of metal work on it, still a long way to go. Undecided if I'll go 3,4,or 5 speed on it.

Walt there's a couple of the dearborn 3 speeds on e bay but I think they are probably later than 65 . Most of the had hurst shifters on them . Some of the parts are extremely hard to find for these transmissions .
