Reproduction mid-60s Buick A-body antenna Bezels (???)
« on: February 15, 2019, 06:58:39 PM »
Dear mid-60s Buick parts hounds,

I'm way behind on eBay but I stumbled across this ad from a Buick vendor that I had forgotten about:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-1965-1966-1967-Buick-Skylark-Special-GS-Antenna-Bezel-Base-Trim-Piece-NEW/333074219469

The text describing the item starts with:  "This is a brand New 1964, 1965, 1966, & 1967 Skylark, Special, and GS antenna bezel base trim piece. This is for manual (non power) antennas). This is a nice bezel. These are the last 4 I am going to have to awhile as these are not currently being made new anymore until a new manufacturer is found. "

So am I the last 1965 Buick owner who didn't know these things were reproduced?  :icon_scratch:

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

Greetings all Buick people that try to get reception in a tunnel... You wouldnt believe what I found in the bolt cans in the back seat today. Yes, stranger things have happened, but this was a surprise find! All I need is the mast... How does it attach?   ws

That part sticking up there is the mast(or what is left of it). If you remove the black plastic nut,you should be able to twist it out of the base. It just has a smalll taper that the nut secures down into the base piece. You should be good to go as long as it comes out ok. Once the fender is back on you then put the chrome bezel, mast and nut back together. I sorta cheated and used clear silicone on the chrome base when I put it together. That way you can remove the plastic nut and mast to put on a car cover without scratching your paint every time you take it off.

Bill the part you have left is the stem that is fitted to the antenna mast  which is hollow on the end! The stem is pressed  down into the base! The base has three fingers which collapse around that stem, the nut goes over  the top of the mast ! There is a ring on the bottom of the antenna , top of stem that helps hold it under the nut! The nut screws onto the base holding the mast and the chrome tear drop to the top of the fender! I can try and bring you the setup and show you on Sunday at the bop or I will post here on the site! They did improve this design in 66 by using a antenna that screws to the base! They are so much nicer! They use a different tear drop with a anti spin tab and the nut is taller to go over the screw in stem!

I see they make them as a repro for cutlass, but I was not sure if base size is the same. I was thinking that I used one from a cutlass on my other Buick. Maybe somebody else knows,Dan

I don't know if the Parts Place is the same mast as the one sold my Fusick, but I know the Fusick one fits perfectly and is about the same length.  Here it is listed on the Fusick website:

http://www.fusickautomotiveproducts.com/prodinfo.asp?number=569310

Here is a comparison photo of the Fusick mast with my wagon's OEM mast:

Here is what the Fusick mast looks like on the car:

It isn't cheap but it certainly fits and looks nice.

Hi Bill,  :hello:  When you get the all the parts for the antenna let me know because last winter i made a gasket that goes under the chrome teardrop. I tried them on my Buick's and it worked great so i made several dozen of them.  It's not factory, but it protects the paint. just send me a PM with your address and i will mail you one (no charge for registry members). Several other members have them and they seem to be very satisfied.   Tony

Yes they are.  Here is Tony's original postings that describe his project:

I would expect finding a used mast in decent condition will take a lot of searching.  These poor things are definitely vulnerable.  Still, you have very good at finding these sorts of things and you won't need a mast until the car is basically finished.  So as long as you have the time - keep lookin'!

Thats the advantage to having a lathe at home. I can spin a ferrule and a single wire FM antenna whip out in 10 minutes. All stainless even! We made 115 miles, to the state line at Illinois and got snowed out today. Viz was about <400 feet at 30 mph. We high tailed it home after   getting a sack-o-sliders. White castles for those who dont know LOL. My pal had his first taste ever and found them to be "different". I forewarned him; "They smell the same coming out as going in...". He chuckled, and we barely made it HOME LOL...   ws
