To tilt, or not to tilt?
« on: January 07, 2021, 07:40:54 PM »
I am getting ready to sell my 1965 Skylark convertible, but first I must fix the steering column. Problem is it has a broken part or two, so the turn indicators is not working correctly. I have a good column in my Special that I am parting out but it is not tilt. Would not having a tilt column make much difference in selling a really nice driver convertible? It is a $20,000+ vehicle and presents very nicely.

Probably not a deal breaker; but maybe worth an A H-HA moment for a potential buyer. They arent that difficult to rebuild, especially if out pf the car. You could offer it with the car for sale as a whistle wetter, or just sell it out right "as is". I for one have been looking for one minus the steering wheel for my '64. Just nicer to get in and out for a 65 YO fat guy LOL.   ws

Kurt,

Depending on the part, it may just be easier to swap out the column.  I have a '65 tilt that needs parts also. I'm finding it a bit difficult to come up with the parts I need. FWIW

Hey Loren... Happy New Year!!!   What does yours need that youre having difficulty finding? Still interested in that 3 speed yoke?     Bill

Hi Bill,

  Happy New Year, Bill !
It was exposed to the weather for a long time. It looks like the steering wheel had been off for a long time also. Consequently , there is a lot of damage to the upper signal switch parts. There is a 12 sided nut, locking washer, springs and other parts that need replacing. And since we are headed back to Florida tomorrow, it will have to wait for further restoration.
I still haven't gotten to the back corner of my shop where the boxed transmission is.  Sorry for the delay in answering about the yoke. We didn't get back from Florida until August and too many things needed attention.

Hi everyone,

So I put the non-tilt in my convertible so the turn indicators work and sell it. If I can make the tilt into a floor shifter version, I can take my time and maybe use it in my Bucamino. The tilt is nice as I have a bad neck, seem to be getting old, and a lower steering wheel reduces pain when driving more than a few miles. I think someone sells a replacement collar to make the conversion.

Thanks, Kurt
