Spark Plugs
« on: December 17, 2009, 09:25:05 AM »
I did a search, but didnt come up with anything:

What plugs are you guys running, and how has your experience been with them? I generally run NGK or Bosch, if anybody is running those, has there been any benefit to going to a colder plug?

I've got a set of autolites in there now, and while they work OK, I've just always been sceptical of the brand.

Also: has anyone intalled a K&N filter (E-1910 I believe)? Before I shell out 60 bucks or so, I'd like to know if it's got the correct "lip" that forms a gasket between the air cleaner housing and lid...

Last but not least:

A shout out to Rob Keena! In response to my post, he sent me a extra 3921carb he had, wouldnt even let me pay him. A little TIG work later (bottom was eaten from exhaust some) I'm back on the road! Thanks Rob!

I'm running the K&N filter on my car and it doesn't really have a "correct lip" on it but it works.

The difference is that your lid sits atop it vs. sitting on the the lip like the original.  You really have to look close to see the difference and it works just fine in my opinion.

If you'd like a picture, let me know and I'll head down to the shop and get you a close-up.

I've been using Bosch Platinums per Tom Telesco's recommendation. Don't recal the number offhand, but it should come up in a search on any autoparts site.

Air filters....I've found the stock air cleaner to be VERY restrictive on my modified Blue 66.
I read a tip somewhere to put the filter element on upside down....lip down....that'll leave a gap at the top to let more air in.

Thanks to all who replied -

I'm running the Bosch Platinum Plus in my Corvair and am very happy with them, so I'll give that a shot. Their website shows the WR9FP+.

WKillGS - Is your car close enough at hand to confirm that number?

Thanks for the feedback on the K&N's - And on the Air Cleaner, I can see that large baffle in the snorkle could REALLY cut air flow, was thinking of cutting it out, but hated to alter the car just to screw around... your feedback makes a stronger case for it. Also, the black housing has become an extra since I found a Dress Up package chrome housing in the previous owners basement!

 Score!

Thanks again, and happy holidays -

Rhett, your engine looks great!
And a big thumbs up to Rob for donating his carb!

I have Bosch #4036. Also listed on the Bosch website.
A quick search over at V8Buick turned up many recommendations...from the stock AC 44s (no longer made), to Autolite #85 to NGK's.  I'd suggest buying what ever is on sale. :dontknow:

Air cleaner..
If you have an open-element air cleaner laying around, give it a test run and report back. I'm curious if others find the stock air cleaner restrictive.

Walt -

I grabbed a set of the Bosch 4036's too, I like the plug alot. Funny thing is NAPA had no cross referance for the 65 Gransport, had to find the plug under a 65 Electra 425  - Go figure!

Yeah - Rob really came through, but it was under the condition that I bring the car to Buick Nationals in Ames once I got it running. So now it looks like I'll actually have to wax the car or something....
