floor plugs
« on: November 17, 2009, 08:13:21 PM »
My body man has replaced the trunk and floors in my car and one question has come up.   There is a part (for which i don't know the name) which is basically the metal plug that fits into the drain holes in the floors and trunk. Can someone tell me whether these were painted in original equipment?  I know that in some Fords they were just left unpainted but were essentially caulked into place.  Are they painted in 65gs'?   Are they caulked into place?  What are they called?  Any details or photos on the look of the original installation would be appreciated.
Thanks  Rob K

Rob,

They are called... floor plugs. They are a natural finish, galvanized if I recall. I think you can get these new from several of the aftermarket catalogers. I think they were installed after the body underside was painted, but before the inside of the trunk was painted. It might have depended on which Fisher Body plant was doing it. They are put in with 3M tan seam sealer. I got that off the shelf at Welle Auto Supply, just south of 694 on Central NE Mpls.

Rob,

Ditto what Mark said. Here's a photo of the silver convetible's floor as it came from the factory. No need to get real tidy with the sealer.

Key thing to remember is that the hump goes up, not down into the hole as it may first appear.    Aftermarket ones are not galvanized like the originals, so I recommend some paint on the plugs before installing them.

I did noticed the outer bucket seat mounts are different than those on my 66's, and possibly my 65 as well.
Does everyone  else have brackets like Johns?

Walt,

All three of my '65 GSs have the same seat to floor mounting brackets.  When I was helping my '66 GS buddy with his carpeting project, I did notice that his brackets were different than my '65s.

The car in the above picture came from the factory with a power drivers side bucket seat--that is why it has the bracket for the outer track vs. mounting to the holes made into the floor pan.  If you look at the inner seat mounting bracket in the picture, you will see that the rear stud is in the hole closer to the front of the car vs. the rear holes you are used to seeing the stud in for a manual seat.
My '65 GS has a power drivers seat and has the same setup.  My '66 has a power bench seat and has the same bracket on the outside on both the drivers and passenger side.

Brian,

You never cease to amaze me with your knowledge and experience. Walt, you have a good eye for detail. I will amend my previous comments about the brackets. I just took another GOOD look at the silver convertible's brackets, they are different than my other GSs. Yes, this does have the power driver's seat, hence the different bracket. I stand corrected. Can't slip anything by the gurus that inhabit this website.
