Dear Harle, sjfd04, Buicknut65, and mid-60s Buick admirers of
"wheelz" . . . .
I'm a Steel wheel poverty cap guy
Yes indeed, that's what my trusty wagon had until 2010. It was more of a struggle because the car had lots of miles and those poverty caps didn't survive unscathed. My Dad was a pack-pat when it came to things like scrap wood. One day someone parked our wagon too close to the edge of the garage and smashed the rear right wheel against a piece of wood. Dad did the best he could to remove the dents but the hub cap was never the same.
I lost another one while going to a conference in the LA area from San Diego were I lived. I had had my wagon serviced the week before then the shop didn't put one of the hub caps back on tight enough. Fortunately, there was a shop in San Diego called
"Hub cap Annie" that had some 1965 Buick poverty caps. The outfit is long gone, but I did buy a replacement and a spare.
However, in 1986 my wagon was stolen and her spare tire was never recovered. At the time we had another spare put on but it had 1 extra inch of back-spacing. In 2010, I had her upgraded to front disc brakes and the shop checked, sure enough the old wheels fit "fine." Well, exactly one wheel fit fine - the replacement spare wheel which by then had been rotated into service. When they tried to put the other front wheel - it wouldn't fit!
At that point I decided to
spurge and go with reproduction Buick
"rallye" wheels!
I kept the best surviving poverty cap. One of these days I need to mount it in a place of honor in the garage!
Cheers, Edouard
