Phenolic spacers for Carter AFB
« on: December 07, 2017, 02:28:30 PM »
Hi All,

Has anyone had any experience with adding a phenolic spacer (1/4") to separate the Carter AFB from the heat of the manifold? Trying to combat fuel boil over after I park. I understand the car originally had a bakelite spacer so thinking it should work. Feedback much appreciated.

It was a metal plate. Bakelight or Phenolic WILL NOT take the heat from the exhaust.

Can anything be done to better insulate the carb from the manifold? Can you add a gasket to have a manifold-gasket-metal gasket- gasket- carb setup?

I think you can do that, seems like I?ve seen it before somewhere and they claimed it worked.

You can plug the exhaust heat passage in the manifold, that'll keep the carb a bit cooler. I drill and tap with a 3/8" and install some set screws.
Once that heat passage is blocked off, you can use any carb spacer.
Manifold is still heated by exhaust gasses. Heat in the manifold will help atomize the fuel.

Another option is to buy better fuel.
