Suggestions for the motor
« on: March 10, 2017, 05:46:48 PM »
Wondering what you guys would do, rebuild the existing 300 or buy a crate motor? Been getting some pricing on rebuilds, not as cheap a when I was 20 years old.  :crybaby2:

Dear George and mid-60s Buick caregivers,

Unfortunately the Buick 300 is an oddball engine, but you can get good performance out of it and there are some speed options if you want more omph!

If you want to get more on the cheap, you could try to get your hands on a running Buick 350 engine.  They were manufactured for many years and lots of guys swap them out to go with a big-block, so you might find one that is running for a reasonable price.

I know crate motors are economical and come with a warranty.  Still this is a Buick not a "chebby."  I'm still bleeding trying to keep my Buick all Buick, but if you can try to do the same! . . . .  :icon_thumright:

Cheers, Edouard

Buick no longer makes their own engines (Re: Suggestions for the motor)

Dear George and mid-60s fans of Buick's "glory days,"

Well, I wasn't trying to make it Chevy, I any to keep it Buick. Don't they sell Buick crate motors?

Sadly, Buick doesn't have their own engines anymore.  If you buy a Buick today, it will have a Chevy engine in it.  The only crate engines that you can buy from GM come from Chevy performance:

Lots of guys go this route, but it definitely violates the spirit of these cars.  I know how much of a struggle it can be to keep your Buick all Buick, but it makes your car that much more authentic.

Cheers, Edouard

George,  You can try some of the larger rebuilders .
I know Jasper engines and transmissions in Indiana have a section in there plant just for doing High performance and specific build engines .
I toured there plant several years ago and it was pretty impressive .
You may have to give them a core for rebuilding but I know they used to have quite a few in stock .  And they have a really good warranty .

I definitely want to keep it Buick, so I guess I will disassemble the motor and look for a machine shop.

Or just find a good running 300 or 350 Buick to swap in there. Could likely find one for a few hundred bucks.... lots of guys swap those out for 455 transplants.
