sway bar bushing size ?
« on: February 15, 2017, 11:43:14 PM »
I see there is 4 sizes of sway bar bushings listed in the 65 assembly plant book . Which one would be correct for the 15/16 sway bar ?   they list .69 , .75 , .82 and .87  . I,m guessing its the .87 but would like to be 100% sure before I order them .

Hi,

I believe 15/16" is the correct size, I recently swap a GS front bar onto my 65 Oldsmobile Cutlass, and that was a 7/8" bar.  Also depending on where you get the replacement bushings, be prepared to modify as I got mine from NAPA and had to cut them down to fit in the brackets.

John,

I can't answer your question on the bushings; I just know they are undersized and .87 is just under 15/16 or .9375

But while we're talking sway bars and you have yours handy I need a favor.  Could you measure the distance from the bushing mount holes center to center for me?  I have two 15/16" front sway bars both out of
A body's and they are different lengths.

Thanks Kevin

Kevin ,  The original sway bar off my parts car measures 45 3/4 inches from center to center of the link hole .
I,m not sure how consistent they measure up . The one that was on my car is not original and that one measures 46 3/4 . ( an inch wider and also 1 1/8 in diameter )
I,m going to use the 15/16 sway bar for now but may change it at a later time .
I did find the bushings I wanted , there was some NOS ones on e-bay with the correct markings .

Thanks John.  I have two 15/16"  front sway bars one 45.75 the other 47.75 both out of A bodys.  I first blasted and painted the longer one but I don't like the fit.  Just to tight, the extra one and a half inches makes a big difference, even more so with no weight on the frame and disc brake calipers.
I then blasted and painted the shorter one; it's installed and looks good.
So the 50/50 rule applied. If you have a 50/50 chance of getting something right 90% of the time you'll get it wrong. A lot of that happening with this resto.
