headers
« on: August 20, 2016, 01:19:23 PM »
Am I the only one with these problems? the headers on my car apparently arent the right ones. I say this because I cant get the oil filter out due to the headers being in the way. I also found out yesterday that I cant get the starter out without removing the header on that side and jacking the engine up to the sky. Im not going through this every time I need to do either of these jobs so Im going back to the stock setup if I can find a drivers side manifold. Is this sounding normal or did someone fib to me about these headers being the right ones?

Mine came from TA Performance, have the same problem. Use a smaller oil filter and a mini starter.

Can you get the starter out without removing the headers?

I've gotten the starter out by loosening the header, unbolting the motor mounts and jacking the engine up. Helps if you remove the solenoid from the starter too.

To remove the oil filter, I remove the cover from the trans. Filter slips out rearward.

My headers were made by Kustom, but appear to be same design as the others.

Thanks Walt, I had to remove the headers and jack the engine to the moon. Im thinking these arent the correct headers . Not sure if Im gonna stay with them or go back to the stock manifolds.

As Harle states, the smaller oil filter works best. I had the same issue with my old car. First time I changed the oil, it had the larger filter which through manipulating all over the place, eventually came out. Unfortunately, the headers got a major oil bath in the process.

Never had to deal with a starter problem though.

I never tried Mike's mini starter from T/A but I got a mini starter from Carmen & it did not fit with the "Kustom" GSCA club headers so I just use an OE starter.

I have one of Tom's mini starters on my blue '66, that's the one with the Kustom headers.

I think all the later headers... GSCA repos and the ones from TA Performance, are the same design as the Kustoms. Hooker may also have made them, but I haven't confirmed that. There are differences in the collector diameters, but that shouldn't affect fit.

The gods just dont like me LOL. starter works great , cranks like crazy, kinda sounds like a mopar product . gets me some funny looksLOL. Dear red lynch and mid-60s Buick caregivers,

Took the car to our car club cruise saturday and some S.O. B. stole my ps pump cap !

Sorry to hear that.  We all like to show our cars to others but it does expose our cars to the spectrum of people out there.  As the news reminds us, not everybody is nice.

Thanks to Tom Telesco  for such a nice attitude and a great product. Thanks too to all who helped out with the info. It does my old heart good to know that people out there are helpful.

Glad you were able to get your car back on the road with Tom's help.  This forum really is an internet treasure!

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:
