shimming core support 65 skylark
« on: November 13, 2014, 12:15:29 PM »
I was ligning up my fenders but the gap between the fender and door at the top was about 3/4" while the gap at the bottom was fine.
I had to shim the core support an extra 1.5" to get the gap right at top and bottom, has anyone had to shim their core support so much?
i do have all new body bushings, but this can't account for so much shimming
The stupid thing is that before i took everything apart,it didn't have any shims ,am i missing something?
Thanks guys

Hi Larker,

Welcome to the forum! Please let us know your name on your next post if you would...
Some more information would be helpful. Did the body come off the frame? Were the doors off?
To get everything lined up correctly the body needs to be straight on the frame, and the sheetmetal
needs to be adjusted back to front; doors to quarters; fenders to doors.

Hi Mark,my name is marcel.
The body came off the frame.
The doors have good gaps along the quarters and rocker panels, so i can't change anything there.
Anyone had to shim so much and did the front bumper lign up with the fenders?

Hi Marcel,

The first thing I would do before anything else is check body to frame alignment.
There are two holes in the right side of the frame & body that correspond to each other.
I had two large pins that fit snug into the holes that lined them both up. This is how the factory did it.
I can send pics of the locations later if that would help.

Marcel,

There are no pins, just holes. You'll need to find or fab your own... I'll take pics later of the pins I have placed in the proper locations.

Hi Marcel, welcome! :occasion14:

Which body mount bushings did you use? the early GS's used 3/4" thick ones, but the later ('70 or so) used thicker ones... that will make a difference.
Also have to ask where you got the radiator support bushings. I don't know of anyplace that sells the correct ones for our GS's. I tried Chevelle ones but they weren't even close.

Walt, I was thinking about the core support bushings last night after I posted.
65s need to have originals put back in, there are no repros that will work that I know of.

Hi guys, here's an update,i double checked everything, the fitting holes line up perfectly, the body does not touch the frame anywhere.
From what i can see,the fenders were bolted on with alot of tension and just pulled down towards the core support, then tightened.
I am just going to leave the shims in and drill new front holes in the frame for the front bumper( needs to come up about half an inch).
My 65 isn't a GS,sorry for the misunderstanding.
Thanks for all the help guys :hello2:
