65 GranSport 4 spd location
« on: July 07, 2013, 12:47:10 PM »
New to the site.  Greetings.  I've been a GS guy for a long time and have a quick question with help in locating a specific car.  Back in 1978 I bought a 65 GranSport 4 spd  out of a wrecking yard for $375.  It was a basically complete car minus the radiator and back window. With little trouble I had it running and used it as my daily driver for many years.  Why this car was thrown away is beyond me.  An all original car including the engine/trans & shifter.  Had a 3.36 open differential and the 14 x 6 rallye wheels. It was black paint with a saddle interior.  Over the years I changed a few things.  I installed the halo roof trim as found on the Skylark Sport model, still don't know why I did that.  I swapped out the interior with a very nice complete white interior that I removed from another 65 GS.  Removed the worn out original shifter and installed a Mr. Gasket shifter (saving the shifter), installed boxed lower rear arms and factory rear sway bar.  The engine originally had the chrome pkg (valve covers, air cleaner and wire looms) but I installed the finned alum. Buick covers and at one point had a 66 QJ intake and carb and at another time had a factory iron dual 4 intake.  I sold it with the stock intake and AFB (originial and correct carb for a 4 spd car).  Long story short, I sold the car to a gentleman by the name of Richard (Dick) Ramsey.  He was a minister of a Methodist church up here in the Northwest and I believe he moved to Colorado back in 85 - 88 or thereabouts.  I have many photos and memories of that car and would be interested in any way of locating it.  So if anyone knows of a 65 GS with the above description I would be interested in hearing about it.

Thanks,  Dave Knutsen

Dave, about 10 years or less? I saw a gs like the one you are describing at a swap meet in Elkhorn, WI for sale!
When I first saw it, I thought whats up with this car?!( Halo roof , gs badges?) The guy who had it for sale was from either around Milwaukee or up by Eau Claire
WI!?  I believe he stated that the car was from out west or Texas? After closer inspection the car was a black ( firewall tag ,back of doors etc) z code ( ca built I think) stick (shifter plate and pivot welded on the frame ( boxed) I found no holes or pins in the doors, fenders, or quarters if it was a re bodied car! which it was not! It had no drive train, no interior , needed floor and quarter work, still had the stick pedals! I did not get to look under the filler panel to see if the gs trim hole s where filled in and how the halo trim was put on?! Hope that this car is still around and you can find it! :headbang: Do you have the vin ? , church records to find the pastor? Jon

Hi Bob,

Yeah I'm still around.  Kinda low profile for a while now.  Trying to simplify my side of the hobby.  The only real big project is my youngest son and me are swapping a complete 87 GN powertrain into our 64 Skylark convertible, which I've owned since 1974.  Nice thing is no hacking involved.  Should be a nice driver when done.
I hope to hang out and contribute when I can.  Good to hear from you.

Hi Jon,  thanks for the response.  Sounds like it could be the same car.  Wonder what the history was after it left here  :dontknow:   Tracking it down will be interesting, unless someone in the area responds. Most likely a long shot in ever seeing it again.
I will have to dig up the old photos, may have one of the data plate and very likely an old registration is hiding somewhere. The car always ran and performed good.   So somebody at the least has a decent powertrain to build from.
Thanks again for getting back to me.
