Throw out bearing Problem
« on: May 22, 2013, 07:23:17 PM »
Guys, I am changing my trans from a 4 speed to a TKO 5 speed. I cant get the old throwout bearing to slide on though as its too tight. My old 4 speed front bearing retainer measures about .005-.007 smaller than the new one . I have had many diffrent muncies in this car over the years but it has been years between and it may be the case that I allways used the same front bearing support for this reason I cant remember. I think I can turn the new front bearing retainer down to work (1.365vs1.370)ish. The bearing is a little rattly so I would like to replace it but I am not sure where or how to go about finding/replacing it. any thoughts?

There is a company in Texas that was selling them a couple of years ago. I don't remember the name, but I am sure someone on this site will chime in with an address or website.

Yea, I think acquiring a bearing will be no big deal and pressing it off the old center piece wont be too big a deal either , I just cant figure out how no one Else has ever had a fit problem with this bearing assembly sliding over there front trans bearing support. I measured every thing I had around any they all were 1.370 and mine (witch is apparently the original part) measures 1.365 .

I swapped in a Richmond 5 speed and had the same problem. I had to have the bearing retainer turned down to the proper dimension.
I'm getting about 1.357" OD on my original retainers. A new throwout assembly is 1.365" ID.
The complete bearing assembly is:
Group 0.799 pn 1367058
Used on 1939-48, 53-60, 63-66 Nailheads

Also check the OD of the bearing retainer flange, I had to have mine turned down to fit the bellhousing. Here's a pic of the Richmond vs the original T-10:
