Phoenix trip ideas
« on: December 13, 2011, 11:27:44 PM »
I'm from Minnesnowda and may have a chance to spend a few days in Phoenix AZ before the end of the year.

Any ideas on anything I shouldn't miss? junk yard, museum, vendors, auction ????

I'm traveling by air so probably wont be bringing home anything I can't lift unless it fits my 65 GS vert.

Too bad it's not in January, that's when all of the auctions are going on.

I don't know too much in the Phoenix area, but there is a couple of great museums south of Phoenix, near Tucson.  The first is the Pima Air Museum, one of the best collections of vintage military aircraft in the world (beat only by the Air Force Museum in Dayton OH).  The second is the Titan Missile Silo Museum.

I agree January would be better with improved weather conditions over Minnesota and the auction options but December is in the plans at this point.

Thanks for the suggestions on the Air Museums.

As the son of a WWII pilot my family spent a lot of years in August at the Oshkosh WI EAA Air show. If you have never been there you should consider it. The sound of radial engines really gets me going along with Nail Head Buick's of course.

I seen Taliesin West a number of years ago and I agree. If your in Phoenix and have some extra time give it a try.

I've been to the Oshkosh museum and will agree that it's top notch.  I love how they dedicate a large section to homebuilt / experimental civilian class and their display of small planes is very impressive.  Hands down, the best aviation museum in the world is the USAF Museum / Wright Patterson in Dayton Ohio which Keith had mentioned before.  This is only about an hour from my house so my son and I went there every year for his birthday, 15 years straight.  It inspired him so much that he decided at a young age to join the Air Force where both he and his wife are enlisted.  The Smithsonian is impressive in quality of aircraft (some of the most historically important) but I found it somewhat limited in quantity.
