Walt,

I'll take a stab at it, as much as I can.

65 = 1965
4 = Buick Division
44 = Skylark Series
37 = 2 DR hardtop
FB = Built in Flint ( should be an " H " in the VIN)

158 = Black interior
Y = Bambo Creme exterior color
A = Black top

W = Tinted winshield only
O = Painted top with contrasting color

2nd group
X = Automatic transmission
G = Console for automatic transmission
P = Not sure, might be clock
R = Not sure, might be rear speaker

3rd group
H = Wide beltline trim

4th group
F = Driver's side remote control mirror
S = Not sure at this time

5th group
K = Door edge guards
W = Custom seat belt retractors

How I do?  Can you verify the options?  I'm a little confused, was this not a 4-speed car?  Was it converted to a 4-speed at some time in it's history?

Thanks John!
Yes, he posted the protecto-plate info on V8. Apparently, it's a real 401 GS that was converted to a 4 speed.
I couldn't decipher all the codes. I gotta dig thru all my info on my 3 computers....still trying to get all the info on the new one!

The 66 GS decoder I posted in the gallery wasn't sufficient for this 65. I think we're almost there...

Richard,

Welcome to our small group of "65 and "66 GS fanatics.  These old nailheads are indeed fun to own and drive, especially the 4-speeds.  I plan to convert my red convertible to a 4-speed after I finish my other '65 GS restoration project.  BTW, I did put a 2x4 set up on my red convertible.  When the time comes for you to add that 'eye candy', let me know and I can help with part numbers, etc.

Thanks Richard.  I've owned that car since 1970.  Fell in love with it then and still am.  Careful, this attraction to the '65 GS is contagious.   John

Richard,

I forgot to ask this question in my last post.  Regarding the 'P' and the 'R' codes, can you comfirm whether or not you have a factory clock or the factory rear speaker.  This will help to verify those particular codes.  Thanks.

Hi the car has the little holes for speaker and it does have a clock,also the remote mirror hole is in the door panel. I had to buy a mirror with the cable. I see there are holes on the wheel wells for trim, it has power brakes,power steering,and the console around shifter not original to car. Do you think i should convert back to auto,or leave it how it is?

Richard....  leave as is and enjoy.

Most folks on this board will tell you that 4 Speeds (and sometimes blonds) have more fun!  ;D

To add to this, the Group 2 option code "P" is Back up lights. I don't have the "R" code however.

The 2P means that your car was built with those back up lights. I do not know what the 2R code stands for, however.

The 3H is the belt reveal molding, which is located on top of the lower body, at the bottom of the side windows.

Thanks Mister T and all who replied.  It's been interesting, but fun figuring out these codes.  Can't wait to meet some of you 65 guys at a car show.
