Need Help with my 8.2 10 bolt rearend
« on: July 23, 2010, 02:29:23 PM »
I have several rearend rebuild issue questions. First off, I have a 1965 Buick Skylark, 2 Door Hardtop with an 8.2 10 bolt rear with 2:79 gears. My ring and pinion are broken (snapped into from the previous owner doing burnouts). 1) Does anyone know where I can find replacement parts for a 8.2 10 bolt with 2:79 gears (not that I want to go back there again. I'd like to put 3:73 gears personally). 2) When I replace it, do I have to find a new carrier and use a remanufactured install kit, and 3) If there are no replacement parts, can I swap out to a 12 bolt posi rear and if so, what would it take to do that (I noticed my rear has the coil spring suspension versus leaf springs). Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

You can purchase 3.55 and 3.90 aftermarket gears for the 8.2 (buick actually used a pontiac rear end from 64-67)
The lower gears will require a different carrier, and the only option there is to find a used 3 series carrier, or buy one of the aftermarket Auburn posi carriers for it.
Where are you located?  I have a set of 2.78 gears on the shelf in my garage, and have several complete 2.78 rear ends stored in my shed in VA.

I have a 12 bolt under one of my '65s. It came out of a '67 El Camino and was a straight bolt in. No mods necessary.

There are 3 different carriers used:
2.56 and 2.79
2.93, 3.08, and 3.23
then 3.36 and up

Auburn offers a new posi for the 2.93 to 3.23 ratio,
Eaton offers a a new posi for the 3.36-up ratio

I'd highly recommend contacting Jim Monzaz at www.jdrace.com
Jim posts on several Buick boards, knows the Buick rears well, and will sell you the CORRECT parts at a great price.
His website is very informative as well.

A replacement rear would be the easiest solution. 64-66 Buick, Olds Cutlass, or Pontiac Lemans will bolt right in. The 67 rears use different rear springs (Easy fix), and 68-up are approx an inch wider. 12 bolt Chev rears are nice, but in demand(and expensive)

Thanks to all who responded. This should definitely get me going in the right direction. BTW Brian I live in south Georgia (Valdosta area) near the GA-FL state line.
