Hurst Shifter for 65
« on: November 08, 2017, 02:38:31 PM »
OK People- I hate the sloppy action of the original type shifter.
What do I need from Hurst to operate my T-10 properly?
I have seen ones sold here and V8Buick that were advertised as
65 specific - is this available new or am I in search of unobtanium .... again  :icon_scratch:

You can buy a Hurst shifter specifically for the 65 GS, I did and it works perfect.  I even bought an adapter to retain the stock shifter handle.

Went with that shifter also but used this shifter handle https://www.luttyschevy.com/i-20839480-shift-handle-hurst-body.html thanks to a tip from Chuck Miller.

Do you have a picture with that shifter installed?

Re-sizing is a pain and the quality goes away.

I installed the Hurst shifter in my restoration.  Here are the details of the parts required.  I didn't buy the Summit kit since I didn't want the standard Hurst shift lever and was going to use my original shifter ball.

Hurst 3915403 Shifter:  https://www.hurstshiftersonline.com/productcart/pc/New-Hurst-3915403-Speed-Replacement-Shifter-Mechanism-Muncie-Borg-Warner-50p296.htm  $249.95
Hurst 3734734 Installation Kit:  https://www.hurstshiftersonline.com/productcart/pc/Hurst-Comp-4-Speed-shifter-Kit-Chevy-Pontiac-Studebaker-410-BW-T10-28p258.htm  $187.24

If you have backup lights, you'll also need the bracket and switch:

Backup light switch: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1960-66-Buick-Pontiac-Backup-Light-Switch-Assembly-4-Speed/271758082785?hash=item3f460b42e1:g:O94AAOSwbYZXUNN0&vxp=mtr  $59.00
Backup light switch bracket:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevy-Backup-Lights-Switch-Bracket-T-10-Trans-55-72/350404239913?hash=item5195b86229:m:mIYJbW-bSmirkeTnmUWG1Lg&vxp=mtr  $49.95

And Dan already posted the link to the Muncie look-alike shift lever from Lutty's Chevy.  Thanks to Brian Stone for this tip!

Cheers!

Here's Dan's picture.  Mine will look similar, except without the consolette.

Thanks Chuck. My picture was coming up too big and after resizing was in a format the site didn’t care for.
Isn’t tech wonderful.

How close does the repro handle match the original shift handle, in curve and height?

The Hurst shifter body is positioned a little further back than the original.... did you guys have to modify your floor hump to make it fit?

Here's a web page showing the Chevelle/Impala shifter handles:
http://www.ebay.com/gds/64-67-Chevelle-shifter-ID-for-Muncie-Impala-Nova-/10000000001772598/g.html

There are repos avail of the original type shifter body and a thicker spacer plate to tighten up a loose shifter. More details in this thread:

Great info Chuck!
Car Craft did an article on installing a Hurst shifter in a 66 GS in the November 2001 issue. At the time, Hurst didn't have a listing for the T-10 in a GS, so the author did some sleuthing to find the correct parts.
http://www.hotrod.com/articles/installing-hurst-transmission-shifter/

For the complete shifter with handle, they used #391 7308. Same body as the one Chuck referenced to.
Install kit was the same #373 4734.

You can install an adapter into the Hurst shifter and use an original shift handle with this adapter from Auto Krafters:

I have installed a Hurst in a couple of 65's for other people before.  The issue I had with the installation is with the head of the large bolt at the top that goes thru the pivot point and holds it to the mounting bracket.  That bolt head hits the drivers side edge of the opening in the floor hump.  Had to modify the edge of the hump and the trim ring around the shifter boot in the range of 1/4 to 3/8" to get it to clear.
