Hi Barb,

Do you have a picture of the tank that you're looking for?  If you're talking about a radiator overflow tank, I've never seen one on a Skylark or GS.

Thanks,

Chuck

Barb,

Our beloved '65s  did not have overflow tanks.  You can add an aftermarket one easily though.
I got tired of my GS leaving a puddle on the ground so I did add one that is tucked up inside the driver side fender by the washer solvent tank.
Works well and is out of sight too.

Thank you for the information. I do not have a picture  because I do not have one .  We bought an after market  one and was metal and we had no where to mount it. And was all shiny, not Dusty's style.

Barb,

It was something I bought from an auto parts store 25 years ago.  It came with a specific radiator cap so it works correctly.
I'll look around and see if something comes up.

Thank you.  Maybe that is why I can not find one.[emoji28]

Wow! Hard to find a nice universal kit. (Re: Over flow tank)

Dear Barb, Chuck, Loren, and mid-60s Buick engine bay tweekers, . . . .

Hi guys does anybody have an over flow tank for 65 Skylar .  Please  and thank you.

Well that depends on how involved you want you install your coolant recovery tank.  You see my Dad and I first installed a tank with an elastic "bungie cord" around 1980 or so and that lasted . . . oh, two decades or so!  :laughing7:

In 2010, I bought a nice universal kit that I even painted carefully.

It was not very expensive and the installing was very straightforward.  Unfortunately, these kits appear to have gone extinct.  That is very unfortunate.  That would be my first recommendation.

Alas the engine in my trusty wagon didn't last more than 2 years after that.  In 2013 I went another route and bought a nice metal tank.  To be exact I bought this model of Mr Gasket recovery tanks.

At the time it didn't seem like such a bad idea because it was about 1/2 the price you can find them now.  Ouch!!

I'm not sure what to recommend.  The Mr. Gasket tank does fit nicely on the edge of the radiator and it doesn't take up a lot of space.

It is late around here.  I'll need to go back and look again.  Right now I don't see a coolant recovery tank solution that will be easy to install and look reasonable in your engine bay at a moderate cost.  I'll try again tomorrow.

Wishing all mid-60s Buick owners a pleasant night's sleep!

That was the one we returned. We had no room for it. Battery was on the way. I was not willing to drill more holes.  The addition must be installed some where near the washer fluid .

Buick actually offered an accessory overflow bottle kit in the later 60s.  My 66 had one on it when I got it from my grandfather--he had the dealer install it at some point.  There is one on Ebay right now, but it is missing the cap that goes on the bottle.  I am sure someone stole the cap from this kit because that is what rusts out and goes bad--mine came off in pieces when I got it.  I managed to find a metal cap off of some kind of can that fit it though.

If the price wasn't a problem there should be room on the driver's side of the engine bay for the tank.  That's where the tank is located in Biquette:

You can make out the cap against the side of the radiator just to the left of the upper radiator hose.  I think that location is the easiest spot to position a tank.  On Biquette is has always been on in that area around where the horns are mounted.

I sure am sorry they don't make that kit I used from 2010.  It was inexpensive and fit very nicely.  The closest I could find this morning was this Dorman tank:

http://www.dormanproducts.com/itemdetail.aspx?ProductID=7849&SEName=603-001

Here it is on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-603-001-Coolant-Reservoir-Bottle/dp/B000E35UV2

Certainly that is a price that is easy on the wallet, but tank looks large and it may be hard to spot even on the driver's side.

This Moroso Cooling System Expansion Tank looks reasonably sized and appears to be well made, but double ouch! on the price.

Alas, I'm out of time again, but I'll try looking around later today.  I can't believe those old universal kits have completely disappeared.

Biquette's old and new tank (Re: Over flow tank)

Dear Barb and mid-60s Buick caregivers,

I uploaded some of the pictures of my trusty wagon's original engine.  They include one of the tank I put in 2010:

You can see it completely to the left of the pictures.  As you can see it fit neatly against that wall and it required drilling only one hole.  Unfortunately I haven't been able to locate this universal kit.  I'll try one more time though.

As another thought, here is another view of Biquette's current tank:

As you can see it is also tucked against the radiator support so it isn't taking too much space.  This morning it occurred to me that while this is an aluminum tank, the metal isn't polished, so painting it should be straightforward.  So if you can't find anything else, you might buy this tank, paint it engine bay black and install it like this.  That way it would look clean and business-like without spoiling your "anti-chrome" decor of Dusty's engine bay.

I hope that's at least a bit of food for thought.

Cheers, Edouard
