Buying new shoes for my baby
« on: March 25, 2009, 02:20:45 AM »
I went to the shop the other day to switch out the rims and tires on my convertible with a set of 14" Buick rallies (P275 14 60) that I bought as part of my post car deal.

I started looking at the tires and noticed that they weren't in the best of condition and the rims had a couple rust spots on them so I'm thinking of buying a new rim and tire package.

Can anyone help me with the following?

Anyone have any comments or experiences with the repro Rally rims / caps that are out there?

Anyone running 15" Rallies with a stock setup (suspension / brakes) without rubbing etc?  If so, what tire size are you running?  Pictures?

If the feedback is positive, I'm thinking of investing in a set of repro 15" rallies with new caps and tires.

The Parts Place has a 15" rim / cap combo for $1100 and Sams Club has a deal starting on their BF Goodwrench TA's next month.

Any help is appreciated guys,

Chris

Chris

I am running repo wheels, 15 x 8 on the rear and 15 x7 on the front.  I have the Hoskits springs which lower the car 1" all the way around.  The front will rub just a touch at full lock going down my driveway. The rear is fine.  I have 245 60's rear and 235 60" front. Tires are Redline Cooper radials.  The wheels are great, just not aware of anyone that repos the wheel centers, most reuse old centers that are re-plated.  My pictures are in the gallery.

Thanks for the response.

This is exactly the setup I'm thinking about.  Since my car will bascially set stock, I shouldn't have any issues with rubbing in the fronts.

Can you paste a link from the Gallery of your car.   ;D ;D

Wow! Car looks great Tom!
I'll have to look into a set of those redline Coopers!
Chris, One of my Buick buddies has a sweet 65 Skylark. He put a set of repo Wheel Vintiques 15x7's on it with 255/60-15 in the rear, and 235 BFG's up front. They fit nicely.
I've heard 275's will also fit in the rear. but one of the V8 guys said they rub sometimes on his car.

15x7's might be out of stock. Summit racing has 15x8's for $192 each. No 15x7's listed.
Repo caps are avail from Mitch Romanowski. He's been making them for years.

Can you elaborate on the BFG sale at Sams Club?

I just went back and look at my post.. I wrote BF Goodwrench.. opps.. obvioulsy I meant BF Goodrich.  LOL!

Here is a link pertaining to the sale Sam's club is holding

http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?catg=12151

Saving fifty bucks off a set of four tires (plus it's local so no shipping etc) sounds good to me.

Now that I've seen those redlines on Tom's car I'm really leaning towards saving a little longer and going that route.

Tom,

I searched for redline Cooper tires and can not find them. Where did you buy yours ? Also, what is the backspacing on your wheels ? The wheels look great on your car.

Hey Dan.. you'll find this place interesting.

http://www.dbtires.com/

Red lines for big rims!

These are really cool and it's the first time I've seen them.

If the bucks were not a option, mount these on some of these rims http://wheelvintiques.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page12.html

I imagine you'd have close to $5k in your rims and tires when you was done.

I need to find the site I was looking at before.  I think I was looking at some new 15" Firestone redline tires.

Holy Sh#$ Chris !! $600 per wheel ??!!  Sure are pretty though  ;D
I'd go with the 15's if you want that traditional look. Maybe even check out eBay for a price break and put the savings towards the redlines. The BFG redlines are about $200 each  :o

Dan

You are right, I cannot find them either.  On the inside wall of my tires it says Cooper Cobra GT Radials.  I got them about 2 years ago from a friend of mine who bought them for his 70 SS 396 and decided not to run them.  I thought he bought them from Coker Tires.  Maybe I have a one-of -kind set.

The front back spacing is 4" and the rears are 4 1/2"

I will keep working on finding them.

Try www.davidsrallywheels.com in San Jose.  wheels start at 145.00 each  There is another wheel place in Fresno Cal that has them also.

The wheels priced at 600.00 are billet aluminum

And here's a how-to article on making your own redlines.....that's a much better match for my budget!;D

Tom,

Thanks for the info on the backspacing. The front tires on mine were 235's but I switched to 215's to eliminate the rubbing. Better save those Coopers. They're collectors items  ::)
