How to mod a Dynaflow cover for your 65-66 GS 3/4 speed
« on: January 28, 2012, 09:54:22 AM »
With the GS flywheel covers only being used on the 1965 and 66 GS with a 3 speed or 4 speed manual, there aren't many extras out there for those of us looking for one. The next best option would be to convert a common Dynaflow cover (up to 1963) to use on your GS. Thanks to Brian for the tip!

Here is the biggest difference between the two covers. The Dynaflow cover on the top has an extended tab that needs to be bent down and trimmed.

Begin by scribing a line where the new bend will be. It helps to lay it out with masking tape first to get it straight and keep the cover a consistent thickness.

It's far easier to perform the bend if you first trim off the excess.  Note the tape that is used to help guide the bend.

I had the best luck making the bend with a pair of vise grips. Tried the hammer and dolly method, but the pliers will produce a straighter bend without distorting the rest of the cover.
Bend a little at a time! Go back and forth along the length. It'll take at least 10 passes before you get to the full 90 degrees.

Now the Dynaflow cover can be trimmed. The original GS cover is the black one in front, bare Dynaflow cover in rear.

Corner of the Dynaflow cover needs a tab welded on for the attachment bolt.

Thanks Walt!!!

I just came back from the storage shed, and have a D/flow cover in hand. After a good cleaning, it will be transformed.

Great write-up Walt!  That is exactly how I did it when I made one for my car, except at the time, I didn't have an original for a pattern, so I just made it to fit the flywheel housing and look sort of correct.  Looks alot easier when you have the original there to compare to.  Have since found an original for my car and passed the modified dyna-flow cover onto someone else.
