Master cylinders
« on: April 18, 2011, 10:37:13 AM »
Are the Master Cylinders (Manual Brakes) the same for Skylarks and GS cars?
I need a new/rebuilt one; NAPA has one for $87 for the skylark and no listing for GS models.
GS manual lists the diameter of master cyls as 1", no differential for manual vs power for diameter.
What is the difference?

Same unit but the manual one uses a rod and the power model has no rod.  I use the new Napa cylinders,  they are nice.

They are the same between regular Skylark and GS.  There are different varieties out there that look different, but fit and function the same.  If you have factory power brakes, the correct master cylinder has a bleeder jet on the pasenger side of the snout on the cylinder.  If you get one that has the bleeder on top of the snout, it will work, but is not technically correct for the Buick.
The ones for cars with manual brakes are different than the power.  The piston is different to accomodate the rod that connects into the version for manual brakes, and the casting is different in that the manual brake cylinder does not have a bleeder jet on it--only the power brake cylinders have the bleeder on them.

Very good, thanks for clearing that up!
I have ordered one from NAPA.
This car is not moving again w/o brakes.  Too scary.
Brian, I got the fuel line in without cutting it.
I did however scrape my knuckles.  not pretty.

The one in the pic in the previous post is actually the incorrect one I was referring to that you will get at the parts store most of the time.  It came on some other GM vehicles and fits/functions the same, just doesn't look the same.   The correct one that came on the Buicks looks like the one in this pic:

Apple hydraulics  in NY will rebuild and re sleeve your original MS. I had them do my '68 because no one re makes the correct drum Brake master with the bleeders, only the disk.  Not cheap but just depends if you want something that works, or the correct parts.
