Small Grille Badge
« on: August 13, 2010, 09:33:06 AM »
Do any of you guys know where I can round up a small badge, I have been looking since Mark pointed out I should have a small badge, I have a feeling that will be hard to find.

Jay

I have one left (I had two and gave one away).

I'd really hate to part with it since they are so unique however I would consider loaning it out long enough to someone (preferrably a company) that could take a quality mold from it and recast a low volume batch or really good replacements (maybe 25 or so).

I would be willing to do the leg work and round up some pricing and even manage the project however I would need guys on here who are interested to pony up a deposit to help ensure that all the costs are covered.  I'm not looking to flood the market with these and ruin the uniqueness and honestly the demand should very niche.  Like the lens project I done, the intent is to basically get really good replacements into the hands of those "early bird" guys who need them.

The other option of course is to continue looking for a good one.  I've heard rumors of these emblems switching hands for as much as $600 but have never witnessed this myself.  If the rumors are true, I'm sure it was back during a time that the economy was a lot better.

So what do you guys think.. is there enough interest out there (with deposits) to make a short run of these happen?  Let's start here and if we can get at least 25 guys talking about this seriously, I can take it to the next level and see what it would cost per emblem to make this happen.

Thanks,

Chris

I would be happy to make a resin copy of mine if it would help. This way no one would risk thier original.

A resin copy would work since most of them that I've seen are more silver then chrome plated (mine is actually chrome).

The silver color could be matched up pretty close with a little TLC and some paint.

I didn't know there was two different finishes. The one I have looks like an aluminum color as have the others I've seen.

The smaller grille emblem that I have is chrome plated, but the surface has a "brushed aluminum" look, yet the outside edges have shiny chrome finish. If you compare this emblem to the Skylark GS ventiports, the surface has the same finish as the inserts to the ventiports, while the outside edges has a smooth shiny chrome finish. I don't know how they did it back then, but it works.

Is it time to move this topic to another section?

There is a small badge for sale on eBay.  Unfortunately it is $15,500. But it comes with a whole extra car.

The process is called satining that produces the brushed finish, a plater that I took some items to awhile back new how to do this but he is not around and more.I wonder if the platers round now know how to do this! I could
use a couple of these if they are reproduced! Jon

Let's see how Al's badges turn out and if there is still some interest in have a couple dozen of these cast from metal then we can pick the project up from there.

I have a feeling that if Al can pull a detailed resin part and it's painted correctly, it'll fool just about anyone looking at it.

Chris

Finally got a good casting after about 8 tries. Will give it a day or two to harden then will ship off to you.
This ##*&*((%$*( gave me a heck of a battle!

Jay,

I just got back into town last night and the package was sitting here waiting for me.  The casting actually looks really good and Al done a fantastic job pulling the part.

PM me with your shipping information and I'll forward the badge I recieved in the mail from Al.

Should just be a matter of painting or plating it (companies our there will plate plastic) and painting the letters red.

Another awesome example of the guys on this site getting it done and helping one another out and the good Karma goes to Al this time.... "Fast with Class!"

Thanks Al
