i have 65 skylark gs.  i finally found a rear end that is suppose to be out of another gs.  the id number on the housing is 288d and there is an OP on it also.  does anyone know if this is for sure out of a skylark gs.  the person really thinks it was.  its just been a while since he got the rear end.  but he is pretty sure.  thanks for the help

Hi,

look at the axle tube ends where the bearings reside, they should be a little larger than the axle tube see the attached photo, for-warning the axle bearings are unique to the GS and sportwagons

as far as I am aware the axles them selves are the same as other A bodies

also check the lenght as not sure off hand but sure you should be able to find this out as 64 and 65 are narrower than later 66 and up

Another way to tell is looking at the heads of the bolts going through the flanges on the ends of the axle tubes.  The GS rear ends had special bolts--they have a round head with a flat on one side of them to clear the tube and hold them from rotating.  The regular Skylark rear ends have more of a rectangular head on the bolt with the ends rounded.
