65 air cleaners
« on: February 05, 2010, 01:54:58 AM »
I have been looking at the GS website and have a question on 65 air cleaners.
Why are some red/black and some silver or chrome?
Thanks

You will see several different varieties on the '65 GS:

1.  Standard black painted air cleaner with red tin on the lid that says "Wildcat 445"
2.  Same as the black one, but with the housing chromed, and the same black lid with the "Wildcat 445" tin on it (this was a dealer installed chrome accessory)
3.  Same as #1, but with a hose going to the snorkle from a breather on the valve cover--this was only on cars built in California
4.  Chrome air cleaner housing with two snorkles and a ribbed chrome lid that says "Super Wildcat" on it.  This is the air cleaner for the 2-4 barrel carbs option
5.  Same as 1, and 2 but with the snorkle pointing to the passenger side instead of the drivers side.  This is a '66 air cleaner--they moved the snorkle to clear the smog pump they put on the CA cars in 66.  Seems as though these came on the late production run '65 GS cars as well.  I have one in my driveway working on it for someone else, and it is a very late '65 GS model, and it has the '66 valve covers and air cleaner on it--and they are known to be original to the car.
6.  Same as #3, but with snorkle pointing to the passenger side and the rubber hose from the valve cover breather going into a hole in the side of the air cleaner housing instead of the side of the snorkle

My 65 has #5 on it. It is a 49-state (from DC) with A/C.  It was purchased new in June of 65.

campfamily,
Does your car also have the '66 style valve covers that have the oil fill cap mid way front to back on the drivers side and a rubber plug in the hole at the front?

Yes.  Was wondering why it was that way, I've found it best to remove the air cleaner to put oil in the car, to minimize the chance I might spill.

I'd post a picture of it, but I don't know how.  Could somebody help?
