Rhett from West Hartford, CT
« on: November 09, 2009, 12:41:16 PM »
Just closed the deal on a very nice 65 Gran Sport Convertible and am new to the group.Car is early build date (01D) and well equipped with Auto, Tilt, Tach, Windows, Seat, Remote mirror, wheels and wood wheel.

Was a Buick tech from 82-87 and owned Buicks (Skylarks, Electra's and Sportwagons)
up until 95.

Messed around with Pontiac :hello2: :hello2:s and Corvairs for a while, still own one of each  - but I'm very happy to be back in a Buick again, and my first Gran Sport at that!

I'll have tons of questions, and thanks in advance for your help -

Welcome to the club Rett!    :occasion14:

It's always good to have people around here that know their way around a Buick.

I think you'll find that everyone here is willing to help you out with any questions that you might have.

As Dan mentioned, if you get a chance, please post some pictures and of course let's get your car into the registry.

Ciao,

Chris

Rhett,

Welcome to our little clubhouse! Since your '65 GS convertible has a January build date, does it have the smaller grille emblem?  Which assembly plant was it built? Any questions you may have regarding the '65 GS, this is the place to post them. Yes, show us some photos.

Rhett,

Thanks for adding your car to the registry.

She looks like a really nice car and the color combination is one of my favorite.

Later,

Chris

Welcome!
Your first GS is the best car Buick ever built in my opinion!  Good score!

Thanks to everybody for the warm welcome, and specific thanks to John for answering some intial questions about my valve covers and steering wheel via e-mail.

I did get the car in the registry, and when I get it out of storage I'll shine it up and take some prettier pictures (it's been sitting for three years).

I'm very excited to get this car on the road again, although other than a fuel leak at the carb it doesnt appear to need much.

The car was restored about 15 years ago by the prior owner,  Robert Fammartino from Hartford CT. Maybe some of you from the New England area are already familiar with the vehicle, although I'm not sure is he was involved with the BCOA or the Nutmeg chapter.

Thanks to all again in advance for the benefit of your knowlege.

Rhett,

I thought that your GS looked familiar to me.  Bob Farmmartino registered that convertible years ago, therefore it's in the Archival Records of the Registry. Chris, since you have all the Archival Records, you may want to note this.  I cannot remember how complete (including the VIN) it was registered. Like you Chris, I think it's essential to include the VIN so that a history of our GSs can be tracked for years to come. Thanks Rhett for joining our little clubhouse. Post any questions that you may have and you're sure to get the information you need.

I did put up a bunch of pictures when I sent in my registry entry, but they werent the greatest as I took them when I was scoping out the car for the first time. I figured I would get it out of storage and clean it up for the photoshoot for the "official" upload to the gallery.

And I neglected to answer a previous question: The car has a 01D build date, but wears a Script grille emblem - I couldnt tell you if it original or not....

I've got my first of many questions on the car, I'll start a new thread to post in the Nailhead section

Thanks again - Rhett

Thanks again to all for the wrm welcome. Another point I should clarify is this is an Automatic car, not a 4 speed. All my drivers and even the Corvair are all stick cars, but I've never owned a switch-pitch car before and I'm looking forward to messing with it. A buddy of mine ran a switch pitch 400 Stage 1 drag car and swore by them.

I've read magazine articles about using a manual switch to put power to the tranny when you want to, as opposed to by the throttle position sensor. Does anyone on this forum have theirs set up that way? I'd really love to hear about it.

Thanks again - Rhett
