fan shroud & aluminum radiator
« on: June 24, 2017, 06:45:45 PM »
Looking for a fan shroud for a '65 GS or what else can be used.
Also, what's are some using for an aluminum bolt-in replacement radiator, automatic 2 spd. This is a NON A/C car. Thoughts, costs & experiences.

Thanks,

GS shrouds are really rare. (Re: fan shroud & aluminum radiator)

Dear Tom and mid-60s Buicks parts hounds,

Looking for a fan shroud for a '65 GS or what else can be used.

As far as I know these have never been reproduced and are extremely rare.  It might be possible to fabricate something out of steel or fiberglass, but it would be that sort of a project.

Also, what's are some using for an aluminum bolt-in replacement radiator, automatic 2 spd. This is a NON A/C car. Thoughts, costs & experiences.

I have the TA-Performance aluminum radiator for in my trusty wagon.  I had hoped to go with a fan shroud, but that wouldn't fit with the longer big-block.  It is a tangled tale, but I now have electric fans and that does work nicely.  I believe TA-Performance only claims to make these radiators for the 300 V-8 but they are custom-made one at a time, so could give them a call and see if they could make what you need.  They are more expensive than the competition, but this radiator fits perfectly and has worked very well.  It is certainly a safe choice.

Cheers, Edouard

Dear Good Doctor and mid-60s Buick parts hounds,

https://www.thepartsplaceinc.com/buick-skylark-gs-regal-gn-parts.aspx?categoryID=26&modelName=Buick+Skylark/GS/Regal/GN&modelID=7&year=1965

Golly I thought these shrouds weren't reproduced!  Thanks for posting this out - I stand corrected!

Cheers, Edouard

Tom, I'm using a Griffn 26242x in my red 66 GS. Fits and works great. Bought it about 10 years ago.
Since then, there have been reports of quality issues of Griffins but don't know if they've been resolved.
Mine has formed tanks with the ribs, looks like original style. Now tanks are made with flat plates...... that may affect fit.
It's a universal sized radiator, fits popular applications such as mid 60-70's Fords and later Mustangs..... there are other choices out there. No internal oil cooler. Cost under $200. Also avail with wider tubes at extra cost.
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/gri-1-26242-x

Summit has other brands avail, use their radiator selector to choose one that's 27.5" wide and a max of 19" tall:

A popular application for this size rad is an '86 Mustang. Should be lots of options out there.

For shrouds, fiberglass repos were made by Kirban Performance and sold through other vendors. Don't know if they're still being made.

I've modified a 300 shroud to work on a GS..... turned it upside down and trimmed an inch or so from the fan opening.
It got destroyed by a flex fan that lost a blade.
I don't even use shrouds on my cars since they run fairly cool.

Thanks for the info Walt, Tom was asking on my behalf. my new build is running hot, so I had them ship me the Summit 391427 radiator, just to try it out. It has a 1 3/4" lower outlet, so any info on the lower hose would be appreciated....  Thanks again.
