Frank McIntyre Steering Wheel PAINT
« on: June 16, 2017, 01:56:53 PM »
Speaking of Steering Wheels...
Who here has painted a Frank McIntyre wheel? what did you use, and what was the process?

Thanks!

I have not painted a Frank steering wheel, but have painted an original NOS Buick one that was tan to make it blue for my 64.  Paint it with single-stage acrylic urethane paint--like PPG Concept.  We added a little bit of flattening agent to it as well so it would not have too much shine to be realistic.  Don't use enamel--does not get as hard as the urethane paints and won't hold up as well.  Also, don't use base coat/clear coat paint because it will always look like it has clear coat on it and not look realistic.

Mark,

Chuck's body guy painted the one for the convertible. It turned out perfect. Maybe Chuck can convince him to do another.

Dan, Brian,

Thanks to both for the info. I'll have my guy paint it, just wasn't sure of the type of paint.
I'm working on sanding now. I used Plastex to fill the holes in the back of the rim and some
other imperfections. Need to get it to the painter next week so I can get it back before Brookfield.
Hopefully.

I use automotive paint on the ones I've repaired and repainted. I spray them in ppg urethane primer, then seal it, then I use base coat clear coat. All ppg products. It's what we use at the body shop. You could also use a Matt clear if you didn't want them as shiny as a car.

Mark, be sure to test fit the horn bar. I heard some wheels weren't quite perfect in that area.

The paint used on both Dan's and my Frank McIntyre repro wheels was Dupont ChromaPremier single stage urethane.
