ST400 into 65 Gran Sport
« on: June 16, 2017, 01:50:46 PM »
A member of the Gopher State Buick chapter of BCA is working on a body off job on a 65 GS.
Engine & trans are in the frame and the body was just dropped on. The shifter mechanism doesn't fit in the now tight space under the floor.
Trans crossmember was moved back and drive shaft shortened to fit. Since I'm not auto trans savvy, what is the solution here?

Keith is not a member here, but is going to send me pics that I will post for visuals.
Thanks!

I was able to bend the shifter linkage and grind off some material to make mine fit. Also had to drill a new hole to move the pivot point for the extra travel required for the extra gear..... and make up a new detent plate which was welded in place of the old one.
With that said, the Shiftworks cable linkage kit is an easy solution!

I used a TH400 cable for a Chevelle and modified my shifter. I'll attempt to add some pics. Got to learn how to do it again since Photobucket stopped third party hosting.

The shifter in the picture looks like it started out in life as a 67. and would have been the one they used with a T400 in the Skylark GS. First year for T400 in Skylark GS and last year for the leaver shifter, they placed the shift arm farther back and to the drivers side to clear the T400. Nice work on the conversion.
