Sail panels
« on: November 17, 2016, 02:30:41 PM »
Can someone post a pic of the interior rear sail panels on a 65 GS hard top? I need to know what they look like, what the lights look like, what material they're covered in, and how they mate up to the headliner....as mine are completely missing....any help is appreciated. Thanks

Keith,

The sail panels are covered with the same material the headliner is. The material is cut larger than the cardboard. It wraps over the top and is glued on the back side.  The bottom edge is left about 2 inches long so that it lays under the package tray . The back material is wrapped around metal trim piece then there is a plastic molding that slips over it. The front material wraps over a metal piece and the wind lace goes over that edge to finish it off.
The aftermarket sail panel boards are not exactly correct in size and shape. Also they do not come with the correct mounting.
I have some originals that I can post pictures of, if you want. Also have the light housings.

Well....I'm sure finding what I need for material and such wil be all but impossible. As you can see....they're completely missing. Even though the shady ebay seller said the interior was complete.... So, what now?

Keith,

The bare panels are available from suppliers like Legendary, but the shape is not 100% correct.
You can buy material and cut them to the same shape & size as originals. I have an original set that
I could make patterns from. The headliner and headliner material is available from SMS in Oregon.
They are the only supplier that I know of that has the original silver metallic fabric.

I need to dig out the originals I have and post pics. That will give you an idea of how much extra to
leave on the edges. The headliner material just gets glued right to the cardboard backing. Some
handwork is involved, but nothing mysterious. The ones you see in the pic were made as described.

Up to this point, the only complete '65s I've bought, have been complete basket cases. lol

As mark pointed out, they can be made.  I've done a few sets and if I recall correctly, I made Mark's.
The cardboard is a water resistant upholstery product. Also used for door panels and some other trim areas.

Loren,

Yes, you did make them!

Keith, you'll need to call SMS and let them know you want the Tier fabric in silver metallic for a 65 Skylark.
If you reference my name they'll have the order with the right stuff.

Keith,

Never looked for a source for those. I assume you mean the rubber that goes in the chrome divider.
Very common for those to be rusted. I got some in a wrecking yard back when you could still find some
of that stuff there lol.

Probably the same for all 64-65 a-bodies. Expand your searches to Ames which has GTO parts and
Fusick which is an Olds supplier.

If you are referring to the chrome piece that attaches to the forward edge of the quarter window, not sure there is a reproduction made.

Also hardtop and convertibles are different lengths.

If they interchange with the 65 GTO, they're $6 each cheaper via Ames....
