Clutch rod bellows
« on: October 04, 2016, 07:55:26 PM »
What does the correct clutch rod bellows that mounts to the firewall look like?  I'm looking at The Parts Place and Cars, but not sure they have the correct parts.  Mark A. got his from The Paddock, but they went out of business in 2010.  A picture of the correct part or lead to a new source would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Chuck

I believe there were 2 different ones used thru the production year.
Here's the one on my late '65 Baltimore built car.

Thanks Walt.  From your pictures, it appears that I have an original and that the replacement bellows at The Parts Place might be correct.  They don't have a picture of the bellows, but being that it is a separate piece from the base, which appears the same as mine, it might just be correct.  Seems to give more confidence to order one and try it.

Chuck,

Found mine, but it's not pretty. Same as Walt's. Cars also carries one that looks like it may be correct. http://www.oldbuickparts.com/cart/clutch-boot-1964-67-buick-skylark-gs-p-22419.html

Chuck,
I suggest ordering the reproduction retainer plate for the boot as well.  Depending on which version plate you have, it may or may not fit the boot.  The retainer plate on my car would not fit the reproduction boot and I had to go back and order one of the repros.   Also note that the boot fits into the retainer plate, not the hole in the firewall plate.  Retainer plate mounts the boot to the inside of the firewall plate.

There was a discussion on this subject over at the Ames/Performance Years/Max Performance  Pontiac forum.
Looks Like I had posted there in 2009!

Briefly.... the 2 rib style was used on many early '64 GTO's. 3 rib style was used on later years.
They did mention having correct repos made but thread hasn't been updated in years.

As Brian mentioned, the retainer plate needs to match the boot..... don't mix early/late styles.

Check out the forums, there's one devoted to 64-65 Tempest/Lemans/GTO. Much of the info relates to our GS's.
A couple of the guys worked on the assembly lines back then or were involved with Engineering. Great first-hand info you don't find elsewhere.

Seems like good information for the transmission boot thread... :)
