Transmission & Shifter boots (manual & automatic)
« on: October 04, 2016, 03:45:29 PM »
I've seen a lot of info over the years about rubber boots related to both automatic & manual transmissions.  I wanted to start this thread to consolidate that information and provide a "one stop shop" for rubber boots related to our cars (both auto & manual, Skylark & GS). Please contribute if you have more information.  Thanks.

(1) 65-65 GS manual transmission - clutch crosshaft boot (at bellhousing)
Reproduced by Buick Farm
https://www.buickfarm.net/519/117/gm-group-0-clutch-engine/p-boot-clutch-crosshaft-at-bell-housing-nors
Replaces original part # 1357843
Also fits: 1963; LESABRE, WILDCAT, INVICTA & ELECTRA and 1964-1966; WILDCAT WITH MANUAL TRANS.

(2) 65-66 Skylark (floor shift auto with long console) & 65-66 GS (automatic with long console) shift rod boot
Also fits 65-67 Chevelle.  OPGI and others - Part #CH27681
Replaces Group 4.015, Part # 3843288
Does not fit 1967 because the shifter is different!

Any advice on where to purchase a boot and finish bezel for the floor shift without any console?  I have a consolette, but actually like the pure look of a simple boot and bezel on the tunnel.  And saves a lot of headaches with the consolette boots, etc.

Mark, I believe this is your setup.  Would love to hear your recommendation.

Thanks,

Chuck

For non-console cars, the closest to the original is the reproduction Olds boot from Fusick.
Differences are- it's noticeably larger, and it's made to fit a rectangular shifter handle.
http://www.fusickautomotiveproducts.com/prodinfo.asp?number=SS6661KIT

For cars with console, there is a lower boot on the floor and an upper boot that attaches to the console.
The lower boot is the same as Chevelle, pn 3842926. It's avail from most repo suppliers. The retaining ring is also available.
Boot, $25 from Ecklers:
http://www.ecklerschevelle.com/chevelle-floor-shift-boot-lower-4-speed-transmission-1964-1966.html
Or from GM Parts Direct, $18:
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/oe-gm/3842926
Retaining ring, $25:
http://www.ecklerschevelle.com/chevelle-floor-shift-boot-retainer-ring-1964-1967.html

The upper console boot for round-handle shifters is not presently available.

There is more info in this thread with pictures!:

Thanks Walt.  Is the 66 boot the same as the 65 boot?  Mark's looks a bit different, but I could be mistaken.

These things are never easy, are they????  :-(

Chuck

Edit:  Just did a Google search for a boot and found your 2007 conversation on V8Buick.  So, it appears 65 and 66 are different, but neither is available.  The beat goes on.....

It appears there were 2 different non-console boots used for 65 GS.

Chuck, I'd recommend using the repo lower boot and retainer ring. It looks fine and IMO better than the extra large repo-Olds boot.

Chuck ,  I,ve been buying some NOS boots off e bay hoping to get lucky on finding the correct one .( no luck so far )    But I did get a NOS chevelle boot that is very close . all the holes lined up with my retaining ring even .  plus it had the round hole for the shifter , Ive seen some with a rectangular hole .
the only  thing I think that might be noticeable is the chevelle boot seems more round than oval shaped .
I,m still thinking about looking into having these reproduced , maybe this winter after my Honey do list gets shorter .  ( not done ,just shorter )

I remembered that I have a lower boot for a console.  Looks like maybe a CARS part and just like the Chevelle boot in John's picture.  Now I just need the retaining ring.  I'll check out the Eckler's part that Walt referred to.

I've seen the rings both in black and sort of satin chrome.  Which is correct for our cars?

Thanks again!

Chuck , The shifter boot ring i have is black and almost positive it has not been repainted . The only thing I,m not sure of is if this car ever had a center console .
I don,t know if that would change the color option or not .

Any update on the upper boot for console cars with round shifters?

I see Parts Place has them for rectangular shifters (with a strange glossy finish).

John - any more consideration given to making these?

Thanks!

Dan ,  I'm probably a little ways away from having the time to really dig into this but possibly this summer I might .
The boot I was thinking about having made was for a NON console car though , not sure what the difference is as i don't have a boot from a console for comparison .

Anyone know of a source for the boot that fits this console?

I have the flat bar Hurst shift lever (rectangle hole).

Thanks.

Hi,

That style console was 64 and early 65 in A-bodies as well as fullsize Buicks, base is different between the two.

The boot isn't reproduced, but most people use one from a early Camaro, look on V8 under the u-shift section for more info here is a link

Just wanted to supplement Walt's great shift boot research & info above. Please let me know if you have anything to add, or if the information below is incorrect. I would hate to have bad info posted.

SHIFTER HANDLE REVIEW:
1964 Skylark = flat shifter handle
1965 Skylark EARLY = flat
1965 Skylark LATE = round
1965/66 Gran Sport = round
1967 =????
1968-1972 = flat

(All GM parts are Group 4.015)

BOOTS WITH 65-72 CONSOLETTE IN 1964-66 BUICK
LOWER BOOT
 -    Flat shifter - (GM 389905) reproduced 1968-72 by Parts Place (CP1388Z) & CARS (SB682-3). Would this fit 64-66 if using flat shifter????
 -    Round shifter (GM 3842926) reproduced for Chevelle 3842926
UPPER BOOT
 -    Flat shifter (GM 1361008) - reproduced by Parts Place (CP1387S) & CARS (SB652-3). Correct for 68-72 or if you are using flat shifter
 -    Round shifter (GM 388494) - not currently available. Only option is to use flat shifter boot (CP1387S)

Anyone have info on boots (if any) for the small early-style console? (picture posted above)

BOOTS NON-CONSOLE IN 64-66 BUICK
 -    Flat Shifter  1964/early 1965 Skylark (GM 1366493) - not currently available. Boot has metal retainer molded into boot itself
Alternatively, use 66-69 Oldsmobile boot (larger in size GM 394261) reproduced by Fusick (SS6661) with Chevelle retainer (GM 3903962)????
 -    Round Shifter (GM 384431) - use Chevelle reproduction of 3842926 lower consolette boot referenced above - very similar boot
 -    Retainer Ring (GM 3903962) - reproduced for Chevelle (same GM 3903962)
