Distributor paint

Should the distributor be painted engine color or left as-cast?  The distributor I have is Buick green, but is not original to the car.

It is my understanding they were unpainted.

I remember Carmen telling me they were black, so he painted it that way along with doing a Pertronix conversion.

I didn't ask Carmen about color, but the distributor I bought from him with the Pertronix magnetic pickup conversion was engine green.  I talked with Loren and he pulled an unadulterated distributor from his parts stash and confirmed that it was bare iron.  So I painted mine cast iron gray.  Right or wrong, it's got paint on it :-)
