Paint markings on T-10?
« on: August 15, 2016, 06:13:30 PM »
I'm communicating with John E. on this question, but thought I would ask it of the rest of you as well.  I'm putting a T-10 into my restoration and wonder if, like driveshafts and rear axles, there were paint markings applied to the transmission at the factory?  Any intelligence on this?  I know several have restored 4-speeds, so hope you have some insight.

Thanks!

Chuck,

In my restoration post #26 http://65gs.com/board/index.php?topic=862.90 there is a photo of the KR markings on the T-10 body. Thought Mark had a better photo but can't seem to find it.

I'll dig up some pics.
I have a vector file of the letters that can be used as a stencil, but could never get a sign shop to make it for me.
Should just make it at home I guess. These are the only markings I know of or have ever seen on a GS T-10.

Thanks Dan and Mark.  Can you tell me the rough dimensions of the letters?  The location is defined by the pictures and looks pretty uniform.

The letters are approx. 3.25 inches tall.

Loren, I'll contact you about the stencil. Thanks!

Roxy says we can make it as a one use stick on that would peel off after painting or there is another material that is more ridged.
More like a stencil, hold it in place and paint.

I have an original trans at my friends garage if you want me to trace it out. It is fairly visible, but there does not seem to be too much particularity as far as location on case. I think they just had a large stencil and fogged it on. Out of the several I have seen,no two of them match as far as exactly where the code is painted. It is always on the same side, but not necessarily the same spot. KR is all I have saw and I heard there are other codes.

...... KR is all I have saw and I heard there are other codes.

Right, the letter code depends on what rear axle ratio the car came with. It must identify the speedometer gears.

KS...2.78 rear
KT...2.92,  3.08, and 3.23 rear
KR...3.36, 3.55, 3.73, and 3.90 rear
KP...4.30 rear

Thanks Dan.  If you can send me a pattern, that would be great!

Here is the long awaited template........

This is cut from stencil material.  Looking at $5.00 apiece plus postage.
Proceeds go to 65GS.com

Looks official to me. My car was pretty visible and I just recolored it. The extra trans that we have does not have a clear K to trace so I was hoping someone else had a good one for Chucks car. You're making it too easy with a stencil. A little cast iron gray and some yellow lightly fogged should do the trick.

For anyone in need of the "KR" stencil, I can attest that Loren's CriCut stencil is very user friendly.  Attached is a picture of the KR painted on my T-10 transmission using the stencil from Loren.  I think it looks very authentic.  Highly recommended!

That does look really nice!  :icon_thumright:

 :icon_scratch: . . . . So where does the KR go on a GM 200-4R tranny? . . . . . :BangHead:

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:
