 All

I have very willingly agreed with my Yukon to join the fun so we will be heading over to NW Ohio on Friday the 9th and deciding on Sunday when to head back.

At this point I do not intend to bring my 65 and trailer unless someone needs the trailer.

My wife is working out of town the week before and after so she will not be joining us.

I haven't made reservation yet so I was wondering if there is a hotel of choice others are using?

The list Kevin posted sounds like some good choices. Thanks Kevin.

It's been a while since I have been through Chicago. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm willing to pay tolls if it's the best.

Looking forward to seeing everybody and getting to attend the first ever

Milton,
Take 94 to 90 south past Rockford then 90 east. Stop at the Belvidere Oasis and buy an IPass, there almost no cost and you'll go through toll both's at 70 MPH instead of waiting in line. When you approach the Chicago area there are a couple choices. Take 290 south to 355 or 294 then south to I80. 355 is a little longer but bypasses a lot of traffic. If you enjoy driving 75-80MPH in a 45MPH zone in bumper to bumper traffic six lanes wide take 90 right through Chicago just be aware the 70 mph traffic can come to a stop in 400ft for no reason. I always take this route it can be a real adrenaline rush, but then I spent eight years in Chicago. In either case you must be through Chicago by 2PM on a Friday, or bring a bag lunch.

I can't over emphasize the IPass, it's good all the way to the east coast.

Hope it helps. Again thanks for taking the time to make the trip.

The IPass is definitely an essential item. Cost $10 for the IPass and need a $40 deposit through a credit card. Good forever. Not only allows you to bypass the toll booths it cuts the toll cost in half. Pays for itself with one trip through Chicago.

If you hurry you can get an IPass mailed to you before you leave. Oh yeah, keep mine loose and use it in several different vehicles.

We travel a lot to Ohio to visit family and it smooths the process on the Indiana and Ohio Turnpikes.  Also made a few trips east of Ohio into PA, NY and VA.  Works well in all locations, but best around Chicago because you cruise through at posted (or other) speed and avoid toll booths altogether.  I leave mine loose in the car as well.

Happy travels!

I'm not sure if this still applies but when I bought mine it said it can take up to 48 hours to activate it after you've fill out the on line registration. You may want to check on that. And yes it is a big time/money saver. It even reads the trailer so when I'm towing I can still use it.

Milton. Rollaround is correct. The IPass is a must. I have made the trip through Chicago many times. In bound from the North you need to be downtown Chicago by Noon to make it with out a major backup. Once you get to the South side take the Skyway. That will hook up with I-80 Eastbound. You have not lived until you make this trip.

It's been a while since I have been through Chicago. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm willing to pay tolls if it's the best.

Milton

As someone who regularly runs a big rig into and around the Chicago area, I have to agree with the I-Pass suggestions. It reduces the time spent at those dang toll booths, which can be considerable when each stop is added up. As previously stated, get through before 3:00 PM at the absolute latest!

I usually take I-290 to I-294 as that where most of my loads go. I-355 can back up a little at the I-88 interchange but otherwise, it's smooth sailing. If you do take I-355 down to I-80 eastbound stay in the left lane once on I-80 when you get to the I-294/I-80 interchange at the 155 mile marker. There's a toll booth at this spot as well. The right lanes will either exit or merge with the left lane after the toll.

Then you'll join with I-94 a few miles later when I-294 ends. No big deal as you just remain on the same road. At this point, you're now on I-80/94. Then to get onto the I-80/90 toll road, take exit 16 north about 1/4 mile which is marked as I-80 Toll Road, IIRC. There's a service plaza one mile east of that point. Indiana has service plazas every 40 miles or so which are easy off and back on, much like a rest area, but with conveniences like snacks and soda pop etc, available.

Not sure of where you intend to exit to Defiance, as I've never taken that route before. Looking at my trusty map, Ohio Hwy 15 appears to go directly there from exit 13, albeit through  few towns.

Last several times around Chicago I avoided the whole mess and went straight south of Rockford down to I80, then east.
Make sure you guys take lots of pics.
