Happy Memorial Day weekend

Dear John and mid-60s Buick patriots,

By all means I second the motion.  Since Memorial day was started to honor the death from the Civil War, I always think back to that horrible moment in our history.  It is a good time for all of us to remember Lincoln's challenge to us in the Gettysburg address:

. . . that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Amen brothers.  A solemn holiday where we celebrate what has make our country great.

Don't forget the flag stays at half mast till noon, then it goes to full staff until sunset.

When Francis Scott Key wrote what would become the Star Spangle Banner he ended it with a question mark? The men whose lives we honor today (until noon) have answered that question.

Dear John, Vinnie, Kevin, Loren, Mark, and mid-60s Buick patriots,

Thanks for the video Chuck - definitely gets the message across!

If you need a pick-me-up after those sobering thoughts, you might play some John Phillip Sousa marches.  A local classical music station started a 9 am march feature where every morning they would play some sort march to help the listeners "wake up."  That got me interested in marches as a musical style.  Of course there are many stern marches that were written for their original purpose: keep the soldiers in cadence.  However, Sousa kicked off a whole new musical form and quite a few composers started writing marches as popular pieces say for the circus.

So if you've got a Sousa album floating around somewhere - today is as good a day as any to play it!  It is definitely one way to feel upbeat about American patriotism.
