Battery
« on: February 15, 2016, 10:17:24 PM »
So, at some point in the past, the previous owner of my car converted the battery to a side terminal. It's time to replace the battery, and so I'd like to go back to the old top terminal. So, my question is, what size battery should I be buying? I'm not looking to go back to OEM style, I will likely just go down to Costco to get the battery, but I doubt they will have a listing for a 65 Buick in their catalog.

Thanks in advance,

Keith

Keith,

The Costco here does not carry battery's but if yours does they will probably have a listing for a 1965 Buick Skylark. The battery in my car is a NAPA # 7525. It is a BCI Group size battery with 625 CCA. Measurements are 9-3/4 long, 6-7/8 wide and 8-7/8 high. It's the height that presents problems as its not quite high enough for the original battery hold down. To my knowledge no one makes a correct sized replacement.

I have a battery from Autozone in one of my cars that magically seems to be the right height.  It was purchased about 8 years ago when I bought my restoration.  When I had a problem with the battery in the red car (that was sitting on a spacer to get to the correct height for the hold down bracket), I put this battery in and was surprised that it fit the hold down bracket nicely.  I'm going out today, but will check a part number when I return later and post it here.  The way things go, that battery is probably no longer available, but we'll see.

Here's the info on my Duralast battery from Autozone.  Part number 24-DL, 600 cold cranking amps, 750 cranking amps at 32 degrees, 110 reserve capacity.  A couple of photos are attached, one showing how it fits in the battery tray and hold down.

And they are still sold at Autozone:  http://www.autozone.com/batteries-starting-and-charging/battery/duralast-battery/959510_175940_0/?checkfit=true

If it has a green top, I'd be interested in the Interstate info.  Can't put a red top battery in a green car, right???   :icon_thumright:

What goes after the memory, I need to prepare for it! Mines a Delco. It does have the plastic base on the bottom, fits great.

It is a group 24 battery. I was going from memory and at my age that's usually a mistake.

Thanks, everybody!!  By the way, Costco out here in SoCal sells Interstate batteries (at least they did the last time I bought two 6 Volt batteries for my travel trailer), so hopefully will be green to match the engine!

I'm going to be replacing the battery cables as well with cables that I bought from somebody on this forum a bunch of months ago, so any pics of the cable routing would really be appreciated as well.

Thanks,

Keith
